Sudan recalled its ambassador to neighbouring Ethiopia on Sunday, frustrated by the stance of Ethiopian officials whom it said were refusing Sudan’s offer to mediate in the ongoing conflict in Tigray.

“Ethiopia will improve its position if it considered what Sudan could do instead of completely rejecting all of its efforts,” a statement from the foreign ministry read.

Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday about the conflict in the northern Ethiopian region of Tigray, which has led to an influx of 53,400 refugees since late 2020.

Hamdok’s offer came within the framework of his presidency of IGAD, a grouping that includes Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Djibouti, Sudan, Uganda and Somalia, the statement said.

Spokespeople for the Ethiopian ministry of foreign affairs and the prime minister did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Sudan recalling its ambassador.

On Thursday the prime minister’s spokeswoman, Billene Seyoum, dismissed the possibility of Sudan mediating on the conflict in the northern region of Tigray.

She described the relationship with Khartoum as “a little bit tricky” and said trust should be the basis of any mediation but had “eroded” especially following the “Sudanese army incursion into Ethiopian territory.”

Relations have been soured by disputes over Al-Fashqa, an area of fertile land settled by Ethiopian farmers that Sudan says lies on its side of a border demarcated at the start of the 20th century, which Ethiopia rejects.

The border tensions come at a time when Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt are also trying to resolve a three-way row over Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

  1. Sudan has been always playing along the Ethiopian enemies for long time. It is an opportunistic country and never have been Ethiopia’s friend. People think in their minds that Sudan has been friendly to Ethiopia and they is a complete falsehood. The only time Ethiopia and Sudan were allies is when TPLF was in power and promised to Sudan to give vast lands of the Amhara and Benishangule regions in exchange for Sudan hunt and handover any opposition to the TPLF government. That is the only pahse that Sudan was friendly to Ethiopia as it found a banda TPLF government in Ethiopian side. TPLF was also helping Sudan to navigate the ICC accused Sudanese leaders for crimes in Darfur. So Sudan never was good to Ethiopian interests never will be and Ethiopia should always need to have in check it’s relation to Sudan in the same way it looked in the past Said Nate’s Somalia. The paradox is that their continous support to TPLF even though TPLF planned to down a plane that the new Sudanese president did take for his work visit to Ethiopia. That tells you how hollow are Sudanese leaders. It is only explainedl by the Egypt’s threat or the desire to be included in the USA friends club at any cost. I think Sudan should be handled at arms length by Ethiopia and if needed with a military might to have them withdrawn from the taken lands. That is the only language they understand as DERG did prove it in the past. Also as they are training and arming TPLF and other destabilizing forces for long time it is time for Ethiopia to help those in Sudan that are being abused like Darfur by Sudanese Arab world backed elite. Ethiopia should always side with African partners and not partners that their Pan-Africanism comes second to being included in Arab or USA circles. As Hailesilasie stood with African nations against colonialism and with Palestine against Zionist expansion based on ethic and moral judgement Ethiopia should consider not forgetting the cuae of Darfur people to be friends with Sudan that ihas opened war on Ethiopia either under or not duress from Egypt or USA and Israel..
