WASHINGTON (WUSA9) — A D.C. church was the target of vandalism and church members wonder if there was more to it.

St. Mary Cathedral Ethiopian Orthodox Church at 1350 Buchanan St. in Northwest was in service when members say a man grabbed a framed picture of the Virgin Mary and slammed it on the ground.

The picture was on the outside of the church and glass shards could be seen everywhere.

“Especially picking St. Mary’s Church he damaged St. Mary picture so we are concerned if this has any motive from another religion who had a different opinion. Police asked us the value and I said it’s priceless. It’s faith,” church spokesperson Frehiwot Bekele said.

WUSA9 was there when police put a man in handcuffs after church members say they chased the man down several blocks.

Monday, police told us that the man was charged with Destruction of Property and Defacing Public Property. His name has not been released
