Obo Lencho Leta, a man who forgot the 2005 Ethiopian Election !!

Obo Lencho Leta shared  his opinion on what is wrong in the coming Ethiopian election here. http://www.ethiomedia.com/101facts/4438.html

He failed to mention the 2005 election as a good example of what Transparent Election is about. Before the May 2005 election there was public debate open for all unlike the current one.

People of all ethnic backgrounds enthusiastically participated in all venues. Huge rallies estimated by millions inAddisAbaba alone, Miazia 30, by theTPLF opponent coalition was  staged.TPLF and its ethnic satellites staged their rallies too.

The 2005 election was a referendum on TPLF Ethnic Federalism of fourteen years. Obo  Lencho Leta call it  “nation of nations”  which was spearheaded by TPLF was soundly defeated.
The ” nations ” which were created and legalized  by force  for fourteen years in the name of empowering the people did not bring a win for TPLF and its satellites ethnic organizations like OPDO Ato Lencho called them nations were soundly defeated.
The opposition under the banner of  ” Kinijit ” and ” Hibret ” run on freedom for all and respect the cultural and linguistic differences among Ethiopians which Obo Lencho Leta deliberately labeled it as “Amharic Speaking Nation”. It was a battle between Ethiopian Unity Vs Ethiopia Division !!!
I am the generation of land to the tillers. As a student we were on the side of poor peasants against the land lords including our parents. We organized the farmers into peasant association and  participated in giving land to the tiller.
That generation never divided our country into what Obo Lencho Leta called nations. We went to all parts of Ethiopia and were accepted by the farmers never been seen coming from another nation.
The Ethnic Elites like Obo Lencho Leta wold like to tell us that all this was done in the name of  “Amharic  Speaking One Nation”. The truth was many youngsters who lost their lives four decade ago were students from all ethnic group of Ethiopia.
Ethiopian leftist  were no different from other leftist groups in other countries. Communism shortcoming is resolving conflict. If you are not with me you are an enemy to be liquidated. EPRP and MEISON fight  opened the door  for Derg no doubt about that. The members of these party who are still engaged in politics never see Ethiopia as  claimed by OboLencho Leta, Amharic Speaking Nation.
The rights of nations and nationalities which the students advocated was exploited by TPLF and OLFite Like Obo Lencho Leta to dismember Ethiopia into Ethnic bantustas called Kilils which Lencho argued now as “Nations”. There are nine at present in a country of 80 different languages and cultures. Why not Eighty Obo Lencho Leta ? Is Sidama ,Wolayeta less than Oromo historically ?? How comes we do not have Sidama and Wolyeta nations among the Nine Kilils???
Isaias Afeworki which is the model for TPLF and OLF never divided Eritrea it liberated from Ethiopian “colony” into EthnicKilils or Lencho call it Ethnic Nations. Eritrea under Isaias is not a democratic or free country but one thing is true there is a country called Eritrea. If Eritrea follows Obo Lencho Leta wisdom it should at least be divided into ethnic mini states reflection of the ethnic difference in Eritrea. Eritrea once which gave refugee status for Lencho is a Tigrean speaking nation.
Ethiopians who have struggled for freedom and equality for more than four decades would like to see a form of federation which is the product of popular participation. The current Kilil is imposed on our people like the constitution. Obo LenchoLeta would like to preserve this Kilil for future independent nation of Oromia. This is an Old Idea inviting unending war in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian people  including the multi ethnic Addis ababa in 2005 voted against Ethnic Division for Equality under One Ethiopia. There are many who want to sacrifice for that cause  as long as we breathe including this write

  1. Obo lencho’s speech is a groundless. I know he was the main artist in for the dawnfall of derg. But,his dream is always to devide Ethiopia. Language is tools of communication for example he can speak more than one non ethiopian language. Even amharic, in history, was not our official language rather geez did. I don’t know why he have amharic-phobia. Ethiopia is home of more than 80 nation. All need human, democratic right;freedom to choose&be chosen;development so why not he fight for them too. Remember che guvera fought for the whole latin america & what is wrong if we make Oromiffa our official language &teach amharic to the whole ethiopia. Now the ruling government is making us strange within our country. I know a lot of oromo students remain jobless due to unable to communicate in amharic. A lot of Ethiopian become very strange if they travel more than 50km from home. Obo lencho should be rational he have to use his mind not only his mouth&hands. Did he think that oromia become civilized, democratic and strong without other ethiopian nation?? If this happen i am sure he would stablish brutal, unstable dictatorial regime like Isayas of Eritrea. But,this never &ever happen. ‘United we stand devided we fall’

  2. Is this guy left any brain in his skull? Mr Lencho
Need to get in kindergarten soon or a mental institutions.

    • After i read your post with attention i find that the idea of lenco can’t possibly clear for you because you are talking about Ethiopia before 100 year back ward so please don’t read and hear about false history written by your Debtera rather try to understand which Ethiopian nation you are Agawo , beja or kimant the indigenous nation and nationalist whose culture ,language and ethnic right dismissed from Ethiopia by the past evil. Eritrean already gone away not because of lenco, esayas or meles because of evil leader before them or Debtera time . so leave your nightmare and think about who you are may be you are from arab during islamic movement or christan you are simply nephtenya.

  3. There is no way the existing ethnic based federalism in Ethiopia will be repalced by something lese. Guys like the writer above cannot see how much the country has moved from a unitary state structure. People in the different regions are extremely happy now because they’re governing themselves. At least no governors are sent from the center. They are also using their own languages and developing their culture and economy. Would these people allow any different arrangement that will divide them under the pretext that it will break up the country? We don’t think so. If you do not agree to this and suggest a ruler to blindly draw a line across people who feel the bond, then get ready for end of the country which you do disservice under the guise of unity.
Eritrea will not reamin unitary given what’s going on right now. There are a dozen ethnic organizations that demand self determination. Follow what’s going on in Eritrea than waste time lisening to Isaias’ propaganda.

  4. Ato Tedla,
I do not think you have read Obbo Leencoo Lata’s article. You must have reacted to the very name Leenco Lata. I know most of my friends are allergic to this guy. I advise you to read it before responding.
Although Leenco Lata did not mention the so called “2005 election” of you popular CUD, he repeatedly mentioned “previous elections”, which I think includes the 2005 election.
Was the 2005 election for referendum on dismantling the Kilil’s? If that is the case, “your group” will NEVER win elections in Ethiopia- unless of course the Ethiopia you are talking about is some Urban areas and Amhara Kilil.
You also mentioned ISAIAS as a unifier – funny. Do not forget he is Hamasein (aka Amahara of Eritrea). What else do you expect from Amhara? CRY FOR UNITY.
Leenco Lata’s message is for the likes of obbo Tedla who are stuck in Menelik’s Ethiopia. Today, we can only tolerate Walelign’s Ethiopia. Please listen to Yaye Abebe and Ermias Legesse.
Finally, let me quote what you have said : “There are many who want to sacrifice for that cause as long as we breathe including this writer”. May be true. But there are also millions who want to sacrifice their lives, not to go back to Menelik’s Ethiopia.

    • Great points, TG! But I don’t think Mr. would get it. The nostalgic Mr. Tedla didn’t have the time to read beyond the name of the writer.

  5. I thank the author profoundly for his brilliant piece. OLF made a tragic blunder from day one by opting for secession; it now became a politically bankrupt organization. Obbo Lecho Leta was one of the founders of OLF

    • OLF never became bankrupt. OLF has generated millions not thousands. For that matter ask a ten years old kids.with conservative estimate , 90% of young generation is OLF soldiers who defend it in all means.

  6. Why are diaspora ethiopian so blind? The nations and nationalities who enjoy the freedom to administer their own region ,to learn and work in their language ,will never accept the dismantle of their regional state .EPRDF understood that without resolving the national question,no futur to ethiopia ,even the Italian occupation gave the same freedom to tne nations and nationalities. Why Amharic speaking intellectual so blind? No more one language, one culture….
Even they are agains the flag which is reflecting the different nations an nationalities.wheter you like it or not ,it is ethnic federal whic is holding ethiopia together .Without ethnic federal no ethiopia.

  7. I am compelled to respond to some ill thought jerk feet reaction to Obbo Lenco’s article posted on various web cites and social media networks. As anyone who is familiar with Ethiopian politics understands, Lenco Leta is a formidable politician, a man of great intellect and visionary leader. I am sick and tired of being lectured by self styled political philosophers who cannot offer any logical explanation to support their opposition to alternative views. Obbo Lencco has made his views and vision very clear in his articles and books. He criticised narrow interpretation of the right to self determination of nations and nationalities in Ethiopia as well as neo-neftenya’s desire to return to the gabbar era Ethiopia. He also equally criticised the current establishment in Addis Ababa for undermining judicial independence, freedom of press, and most importantly constitutionally guaranteed separation of powers/ centre-periphery power relations.
It is quite disturbing to read articles and opinion pieces written by neo-neftenyas. This vulgar interpretation of the writer,s view tells you that neo-neftenyas stop at nothing from throwing mud at anyone who disagree with their views of neftenya era Ethiopia. Le’s not forget that the neftenya era Ethiopia was led by men, who by virtue of being the tribe of Judah, claimed to have god given right to rule over other tribes. Nowhere else in the world throughout the history of human social progress in the last century, one claimed to be the king of kings, the tribe of Judah and therefore elect of god. They want us to forget that it was under these so called elect of god that Ethiopia was declared as a monocultural nation and projected to the outside world as such at the expense of other cultures. It was under gabbar Ethiopia that the entire southern nations were singled out and subjected to discriminatory tax system.
They claimed in their So called constitution of 1931 to be natives and characterised others as subjects.
Only the tribe of Judah deserve citizenship status while other nations in their official document referred to as subject.
Orthodox Christianity became state religion at the expense of other faiths of Christian denominations, Islam and traditional beliefs. Cultural institution of none tribe of judah were banned and the oppressive state institutions were deployed to enforce the ban. The 1974 change of government dwelled primarily on politically ideology to salvage the dominant by cosmetic surgery. It was after 1991 change of government that kids from different cultures and linguistic background won the right to learn in their mother tongue languages. It was after that change government that nation and nationalities won more or less self governing rights.
Can you compare this with what happened under elect of god leaders? Don’t you think it is madness to expect Ethiopians to return to your elect of god era Ethiopia?. You have once been trouble makers but now you are in trouble with us. Therefore, please stop dreaming to inexorable power of nations. The problem is TPLF not federalism. Wayyane’s control over power at the centre and undue influence over periphery is a problem. Come to your conscience and join the fight against injustice or zip.

  8. Not clear why Eritrea and Isayas made it to this article by Ato Tedla. Could it be the usual “sayterut abet saylikut wedet” cheer leading? I just can’t stand such personalities.

  9. Having read Obbo Lencho Leta’s piece, on can observe that, he still thinks that ethnic politics is the panacea for all Ethiopian body politics. That is why he go out of his way to categorize any breathing soul as Amhara if he/she supports the inviolability of the unity of Ethiopian people. Mr Lencho’s comrades are the ones who instituted the blue print he had worked in tandem. We would have liked to hear his take on the effects of this policies on Ethiopian people, including Oromo Ethiopians he aspired to free in disjoint. However, on can be in agreement to the one point Obbo Lencho Leta raised about Ethiopian Politics; that is “if you are not with me you are against me politics.” No doubt, the effect of this politics is still affecting our political discourse to the detriment of our zeal to establish a true democratic federal Ethiopia. There are two sides as to how we going to nurture a tolerant political discourse. One would have liked TPLF’s to come this understanding earlier, but since their “calculated” move in 2005 brought the unexpected it looks like they are going to wait till the balance of Power starts to slip under their feet. So at this time only the opposition can nurture the politics of tolerance among themselves while they sharpen their struggle against TPLF. So Mr Lencho has brought some good points regarding the politics of tolerance although his categorization of the Ethiopian politics leaves so much to be desired.

  10. Ato( Mr) Tedla,
The Kilili issue is cemented for ever and no power on this earth will reverse it. Our struggle is to free kilili from Woyane control not to dismantle it.Please do not get headache with finished business.Qimanti will be kiliili too as well as Rayyaa.

  11. Luckily the likes of Tedla and die hard neftenya associates will not come to power AGAIN! The Ethiopia you imagine to have in your mid is already dead. There will be no ethnicity based subjugation of Oromo, Sidama, Somali, Afar etc. in the coming decades, centuries and generations. Leave with this fundamental truth even if it is bitter than kosso! The Ethiopia your fathers have built is where Oromo were: sold as slaves, subjected to brutal amputation of breasts and arms, suffered humiliation and subjugation unheard in human history; decimated and subjected to genocide( 5 million Oromo were killed by the murderous Menelik army). Thus do not present the old Ethiopia as paradise of peace, tranquility and justice. Ehiopia was an anomalous place where Oromo language, culture was buried ALIVE by Amhara. Luckily it survived and its comeback has a consequence for Amahara with or without Leencoo. The current generation of Oromia will never ever accept a minority language as a national language!

  16. Obbo Lencho Leta, never mind those negative and bad faith ethnocentric comments. Though I disagree with many things I still agree your struggle for an affan Oromo language and its cultural revival. Thank you Sir again and well done.

  17. Just to say briefly about lencho leta. He is totally rejected among all oromo socities of difrent political persuasion. The INDEPENDENT OROMOS the wuyane oromos and the ethiopian oromos are all against him. His diaspora followers world wide are estimated fewer than 100. And the majority of them are depressed, hopeless and expelled from OLF because of lack of personal discipline. This is what lencho leta said him self on VOA about two years ago.
lencho leta is not dependable. He is unpredictale. His behavior is eratic. So let us not worry about this erelevant individual.
