Professor Bereket Habte Selassie is an Ethiopian/Eritrean/American scholar with the depth of knowledge about East Africa, particularly Ethiopian politics. On numerous occasions, I have heard him talk while promoting his books or as an invited speaker in different forums.
As we know it, the Eritrean independence quest came from four reasons:
1.From zealous religious groups within Eritrea aided by the Arabs
2.The ill treatment of Eritreans by subsequent governments within Eritrea and elsewhere in Ethiopia.
3.The belief of Eritreans thinking they are superior to the rest of the Ethiopian people. A syndrome they got from the Italians, British and Arabs.
4.The support they received from Syria, Iraq, the Gulf states, the Saudis etc. fuel the hatred to kill each other for over 30 years and still the cause of slaughtering each other for worthless reasons.
As for Ethiopia and Eritrea, the demise of the Derg did not solve the suffering of the people. The separation of Eritrea from Ethiopia have not brought to the people of Eritrea tranquility and peace. Instead, untold suffering and sadistic practices by the vanguards of the freedom fighters. Ethiopia is no better. The TPLF (A single ethnic group) fleeces the country to its bones, by dividing the country along ethnic lines. Effectively, creating an apartheid system. The Ethiopian and Eritrean people are one and the same people. Had the late prime Minster of Ethiopia Mr. Zenawi looked his own eyes before purging out the Eritreans from Ethiopia, he would of seen the color of his eyes in the people he was forcing to leave Ethiopia. Then again, logic does not work in African politics. Blindness does!
If Ethiopia and Eritrea want to be counted as strong and stable countries on the horn of Africa as well as globally, they must reconcile their differences and live in peace instead of undermining each other. I do not care if Eritreans want to stay as an independent country or be part of Ethiopia. That is not for me to say. It is for the Eritrean people to choose without the barrel of the gun pointed at their head. Regardless of this, they must learn to forgive and forget and move on to a new height instead of beating the drum of war (past and present) and fighting for nothing. I am sure die hard EPLF cadres will love to wring Prof. Habte Selassie’s neck for his opinion. That is how they settle their differences, by imprisoning, killing and harassing their opponents. Stop glamorizing and demonizing one or the other when it comes to EPLF or TPLF. I have news for you. They are two sides of the same coin. One is no better than the other! Get over it!
