PRESS RELEASE

HIBRE AMHARA ASSOCIATION CONDEMNS HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN ETHIOPIA.

Norway, 24-12-2023

Hibre Amhara Association in Norway expresses deep concern over the escalating violence and human rights abuses perpetrated by the Ethiopian government against its own people, particularly the Amhara community. As the representative of the Amhara diaspora living in Norway, we strongly condemn the ongoing Amhara genocide.

The Ethiopian government has been mercilessly targeting innocent civilians through drone attacks and artillery shellings, resulting in numerous casualties. These acts of violence are not only in violation of basic human rights principles but also demonstrate a complete disregard for the value of human life.

Moreover, we have observed with great dismay that the Ethiopian government is actively sabotaging and manipulating the YouTube administration to block accounts critical of its actions.

This not only stifles freedom of speech but also hinders the international community from obtaining accurate information about the atrocities being committed.

The situation for Ethiopian refugees has also worsened. Ethiopian government agents have been reported to kidnap Ethiopian refugees in African countries, with notable cases like the famous journalist Mr. Gobezie Sisay being kidnapped from Djibouti and currently imprisoned in Ethiopia under torture.

In the Middle East, Arab countries have been coerced into charging Ethiopian refugees with false accusations, highlighting a systematic effort to persecute and silence those seeking safety and asylum.

We are also deeply concerned about the unjust imprisonment of Suleiman Abdela, a renowned journalist, in Saudi Arabia on fabricated charges. This is a clear example of truth-telling voices being silenced and a stark reminder of the dangers faced by individuals attempting to expose human rights abuses in Ethiopia.

Hibre Amhara Association firmly believes that refugees deserve protection, regardless of their country of origin. It is disheartening to witness the lack of action from Western democracies in addressing these flagrant violations of human rights, which raises questions about their commitment to upholding democratic values worldwide.

We call upon the international community, human rights organizations, and governments to denounce these egregious human rights violations in Ethiopia. We urge them to take immediate action to end the violence, protect refugees, and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.

Hibre Amhara Association stands in solidarity with the oppressed Amhara community and all Ethiopian refugees who continue to face grave injustices. We are committed to raising awareness, advocating for change, and working towards a future where human rights and democracy prevail in Ethiopia.

About Hibre Amhara Association:

Hibre Amhara Association represents the Amhara diaspora in Norway, focusing on promoting Amhara culture, advocating for human rights, and supporting the Amhara community both within Norway and worldwide.
