The Accidental Rise and the foreseeable Fall of Abiy Ahmed

Yonas Biru, PhD

Executive Summary

Ethiopia has never been in danger as it is today. Prime Minister (PM) Abiy Ahmed lacks the requisite experience to govern a nation embroiled in multidimensional tribal conflicts, much less to shepherd Ethiopia’s economy out what the economist Richard Nelson called a low-level equilibrium trap. But he is too enamored with his self-prophesized mission as the redeemer of Ethiopia to acknowledge his failure. His narcissistic leadership has denied him the humility to learn from his mistakes and seek advice and counsel from people of experience, and subject matter expertise.

The PM’s manifesto may champion the principles of መደመር (synergy), but his governance calculus is a reductive operation. People of moderate political persuasion who constituted his support base are increasingly changing their affiliation from ተደምረናል to ተቀንሰናል at an alarming rate.

In the meantime, a plethora of Oromo extremist forces are proliferating like a weed. The most dangerous extremist group is Oromo-Shene. Their threat to the survival of Ethiopia is further exacerbated by the Oromo shadow government that is run by a fifth column faction within the PP-Oromo leadership.

This is exacerbated by the PM’s dysfunctional bureaucracy. His cabinet is at best sub-mediocre, or at worst terrible. The story of current day Ethiopia is the story of a young prime minister juggling economic hot potatoes, standing on a political sand dune that is slipping away under his feet.

The year 2018 was the year the PM rattled impressive and transformative reforms, showcasing his vision and strategy and winning accolades from all corners of the world. In 2022, his failed administration was in full display as he filled the airwaves with complaints, accusing everyone but himself for the nation’s crisis. It is time for him to rein in his narcissistic tendencies, reflect, reassess, and reset. If not, the growing narrative about a post-Abiy government may get traction.

Resetting his government is not going to be an easy endeavor. Currently, the Oromo political space is engulfed with a three-way power struggle between the PM, Shene-Oromo, and the Oromo Shadow government. Ethiopia’s future depends on which of the three comes out on top.

The Shene-Oromo malignant forces tactfully process their war against Amhara People through the pro- and anti-Abiy political algorithm to optimize their power leverage. As a result, they have successfully used the PM as the transmission line and converter station to escalate their tribal animosity into a national conflict.

Three questions serve as a window to investigate the complex political problems: Who is the boss in the Oromo political landscape? What is the strategy and end-goal for Amhara political factions? What role the international community can play to catalyze a peace process.

The purpose of this article is to shed light on the dark souls and the blind spots of Ethiopian politics and recommend a way out.

  1. Dr. Biru:

We know a lot about Oromo Shene although their real name is OLF. However, who is Amhara Shene? I think neither you nor abiy ahmed nor all OLF groups such as Jewar and Merara has evidence about the existence of this group. As it has been explained by several sources, the Amhara group fighting in Wollega is a group of Amhara militia recruited from Amharas living there and armed by the local government, a few months ago, to fight OLF. Does this group deserve the name shene? Not, of course as they are trying to defend themselves from a massacre that started four years ago. The Amhara Fano, a group of nationalist Ethiopians who went to the war front to defend the advance of woyane to Addis and latter betrayed, disarmed and jailed by Abiy ahmed, is now very much weakened let alone being a security risk to the country on the level the oromo shene is.
As a PhD degree holder and intellectual, I expect you to write about facts, not hearsays and political false equivalencies concocted by abiy ahmed, who used the term “Amhara shene” a few weeks ago.

    1. TPLF becoming a pain in the neck

As of yesterday , the formation of a Mechanized infantry unit in Amhara region came to light and this unit has been organized by the help of Eritrean regime and its army leaders.
The genocidal eritrean army is also preparing to ignite another bloody conflict , however, Tigrayan army has been disarmed and obliged to surrender its heavy artilleries.

TPLF is endangering its people .TPLF , the dictatorial mafia group, should leave its position to other parties in Tigray.

  2. One Shegitu Dadi, a very forward looking Oromo woman has the following to say on confederation. I’m copying and pasting her write-up without her authorization hoping that she’ll not mind.

“Here is how to save Amharas, Oromos and the country.

Once again in our recent history, Amharas have emerged as the holders of the master key to solve Ethiopia’s multifaceted problems . How? By opting for confederation.
Amharas have no choice but to move for confederation simply because federation in the Ethiopian context does not work.

As a polirized multi-ethnic country, Ethiopia will not have a fair and free election without the opression of one or another ethnic group. Hence, democracy is an illusion that cannot be realized. The way Oromo rose to power and now control the entire country through proxy regional governments is the proof. Tigreans did it for the last thirty years and Oromos have stepped in Tigreans shoes to impose similar one ethnic group rule. With their number and the size of their region, Oromo opressive rule will be much worse than Tigrean`s. Give another ten years to Oromo rule, Ethiopia will be the tail of the whole world by all standards of measure.

So, it is time for Amharas to exercise their constitutional right to self-determnation and vote on confederation. If they adopt conederation, it will give them the opportunity to attract direct foreign investment since confederation will enable them to have economic diplomats and even have embasies abroad cutting the Oromo controlled foreign ministry diverting foreign investment to Oromia and other favoured regions. Amharas can also have a defense force which will protect them from foreign invaders including ethnic Oromo organizations.

The Belgian model of confederation which appears to hep advance Amhara interests is something to explore.

In any event, Ethiopia needs vast decentralization resembling confederation since the federalism the country has adopted is notheing other than unitarism in disguise. Controlled from the centre, it has miserably failed to develop the country let alone prosper and ensure safety and security of its citizens. The chaos we see in the country right now has much to do with lack of development (in all sectors) and security. Both have proven beyond the capacity of the federal government to provide.change of government at federal level is not the answer for these problems.

In private, Tigreans have floated the idea of confederation, Amharas must follow. Tigreans know that they will not be fairly treated under Oromo rule; as a result, their choice of confederation appears just. Amharas must seize the opportunity to decide their destiny via self-determination as well without wasting another decade under incompetent Oromo rule. Despite all the atrocities they have committed, Tigreans are being heard and embraced by the Oromo rule since Oromos now feel tobe the savours of Ethiopia.

Folks! Don’`t be fooled!. Oromos pretend to be “savours” only if they rule the entire country as one piece. Like any other ethnic group that aspire to oppress and dominate , they are after resources. If Amharas want to be heard and embraced as Tgreans, they have to go for confederation. If confederation does not work, they have to say good bye to the Ethiopian state.

It is outdated for Amharas to hang on “mama Ethiopia” cry since nobody in the country is interested in it any more. What Amharas got from this cry is atrocotoes, redicule and shame. All these on Amhara because they gave Oromos and other ethnic groups a country which they are not ready and willing to let go. If Amhara insist on confederation, Oromos might call the army on it to protect the unity of the country! That will make them a laghing stock since they were in the forefront to weaken the unity of the country. Now they cannot be alllowed to reverse gear.

Amhara! Wake up and smell the coffee. Tell Oromos that you want confederation – if not confederation then separation. Oromo crack down will soften even disappear as it did for Tigreans if Amhara opt for confederation. But the idea is not to see Oromo softening on Amhara, it is to seek real confederation as a wayout from decades long quagmire. Oromo softeneing does not take amharas anywhere.

Try it! It will work and catapult Amhara development and growth to the sky and ensure their security. It will eventually liberate us, Oromos too from our bloody distructive path poised to takie everybody else down with us. »

    Great!

  3. There is no concrete earthly evidence pointing to the fall of Abiy Ahmed. As a US puppet with a healthy physique, Abiy has another twenty five years in the saddle – if were to judge by looking at the average tenure of a US puppet. Looks like the expiry date of their puppet to the North, however, is fast approaching.
Of course, heavenly matters are a whole different thing. Abiy Ahmed, having wallowed in the blood of innocents, may be due for a Mane-tekel-fares disposal anytime.

  4. I think it is a tactic and conspiracy to save the failing
pp government by putting all the blame on a single
    man PM AA.
I believe is just made to be a scapegoat for all the
corruption and failures of all governments and the
the TPLF who were beaten by his Avatar.

  5. Yes, you are right at the point!!! Ethiopia has never been in danger as it is today, Ethiopia sliding backwards under Abiy Ahmed

    1. …and PM Abiy is to blame? It is easy to sit and watch or criticize what one is doing. The question is what have you done..or are you doing to change the condition you dislike in Ethiopia? Do something..

  6. Abiy’s government and the TPLF-led government of Tigray will not lead to stability or peace, even if it ends the war in northern Ethiopia. Nor it is enough for Abiy to miraculously restore his lost support from Ethiopian People to bring about sustainable peace.

  7. Abiy Ahmed not only has failed to live up to his early promises and Medemer philosophy, The failure of Abiy Ahmed is dragging the countryto a bloodier time. Today, Tigrayans take revenge on Amharas and Afaris.
Abiy Ahmed’s authoritarian regime as he is surrounded by incompetent individuals and advisers in his administration. Failure to manage ethnic tensions at root of Abiy’s troubles

  8. I live in North America and often zehabesha.com doesn’t post my replies to the articles posted. Yet, it posts articles about democracy in Ethiopia. I wonder what You & Co. could have done to Ethiopians had you had an iota of Abiy’s powers.

  9. With due respect, conversations auch as this is not useful to improve the condition our country has been in for a long time. What the author expresses is at best frustration, and at worst, undermine all the efforts and achievements made by the PM Abiy government thus far. Whether you acknowledge it or not milestones have been reached both in the political as well as the economic fronts.

The doom and gloom of Ethiopia, and the demise of PM Abiy’s government is discussed extensively. Nothing new here. The author believes PM Abiy ascension to power was “accidental” which is an attempt to blatantly dismiss the democratic election process the nation ever had to elect Dr. Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister. I’m sure most of the diaspora and the Ethiopians believed or at least felt he was a Godsent. That aside since he assumed power he has toiled day and night to restore Ethiopia’s image in many fronts the critical being self-sufficiency in food aid. Have you ever read https://odihpn.org/publication/when-will-ethiopia-stop-asking-for-food-aid/

As to the PM’s cabinet being, “… at best sub-mediocre, or at worst terrible.”, it is unfair and frankly an insult. Take Ambassador Dr. Engineer Seleshi, President Sahel Worq, Dr. Berhanu Nega, and many others. Are they mediocre?

The author needs to be reminded that during his first visit to the USA, PM Abiy faced with a bankrupt treasury, begged the diaspora to donate $1/ day to the Ethiopian Diaspora Trust Fund (EDTF). That is how he began his governing.

I think the right thing to do is to give our support whenever and wherever the government asks us in areas each of us are capable of. But being 10,000 miles away and criticize, humiliate and in some cases lobby for sanctions to be imposed; and in most recent case insult the PM as it happened at African leadership summit is shameful. By the way, should your wish come true that, PM Abiy decide to stepdown, there is no doubt that will be the happiest day of his life.

  10. Dear Dr Yonas
I really appreciate your concern for our misfortune Ethiopia from time to time and I was very happy meeting you in person and got your great personality at Sliver Spring MD when you came for a ceremony of your siblings children school ceremony at Lutheran church.
Coming to our Ethiopian current situation you just out the right questions that should be addressed properly with wise assessment.
As community leader and concerned Ethiopian I answer your question as follows,
    1. The boss in the Oromo political landscape is the very hostile elites who always find a reason to make the great Oromo the majority ethic group to be the second class citizen and consider Ethiopia as land of the Semitic Amhara and Tigray people. There are tow failures ion Oromo struggle that the very Ethiopian people struggle against the evil feudal system by Ethiopian party back in 1960s was converted to OLF Oromo liberation front and the second one the progressive Ethiopian oppressed people movement partner to military Derg was converted to OLF why? Oromo should take the leading position for all justice movement in Ethiopia as an Ethiopian regardless of those anti Oromo groups who want to exclude Oromo from Ethiopia.
2.Regarding the Amhara issue , it is very out dated for Amhara ethic people to consider Ethiopia and Amhara are the same and Amhara as ethic groups should be an asset of Ethiopia that should be part of the emancipation of all oppressed people in Ethiopia and detach from the fabrication of the feudal legacy considering others as subordinate due to the promotion of Amhara culture and language. Let the ethno- centrist Amhara elites end their evil propaganda of making Amhara special race but accept Ethiopia as a nation of all ethic groups including the Amhara .
    3. The international community can make contribution for the peaceful solution of Ethiopian politics by using credible information from us Ethiopians with factual evidences that there was oppression and segregation of other cultures except Amhara culture in the past feudal regimes. This is not to mean Amhara ethic group individuals were oppressors but the system was led by cruel Amhara kings and feudalls who suppress the culture and identity of other ethic groups.

“Three questions serve as a window to investigate the complex political problems: Who is the boss in the Oromo political landscape? What is the strategy and end-goal for Amhara political factions? What role the international community can play to catalyze a peace process’

  11. I got an impression that Obbo Dr. Yonas is over taken by raw emotion this time around. It starts with the topic he chose for his article. That is very uncharacteristic of him. It is a well written article, thought provoking and a good set up for civil discussion. But it concludes leaving the cardinal question still wide open. I am from a school of thought that when a politician stays in a leadership role for an extended period, his animal instinct may or tend to take over. He will develop this arrogant idea that without him the existence of the country he leads would be in jeopardy. Do you need examples? Well, just look around throughout Africa, many former Soviet satellite nations including Russia and the commies den China. So I am in agreement with the dear Author that the current PM H.E. Abiy bin Ahmed should step down at some point in an orderly manner. His relinquish of leadership SHOULD NEVER LEAVE BEHIND A POWER VACUUM just like in 1974. The question left wide open for me is who is the one ready to take his place? Any one among the opposition? Don’t start with me about the opposition. Please don’t. What, there are more than 80 so-called parties? If there is a power vacuum they will turn on each other like mortal enemies, like territorial hyenas and a pride of lionesses. In pre 1974 years commies among us students were lambasting for the overthrow of an aging emperor and managed to arouse the interest of a few smart alecks in the military that was hand made by the emperor himself. They accused the monarch of ignoring starving people who were dying. They teamed up with smart aleck officers had him and his ministers rounded up and butchered that left the rest of the world horrified. They were accusing the emperor of ‘massacring students which was certifiably false and lies. It did not take the sweet talking officers too long to show the commies what the real massacre looked like in just 2 years after 1974. When millions were dying of starvation in 1984 Mengistu was busy importing the best Khamr(hard liquors) from the cellars of Europe. By then he had already made a quick job with the commies who used to deafen us at student conventions during the years before 1974. Power vacuum is not something to play around with. That country has paid dearly for it already and should never be repeated. So I close my comment with a question that has been nagging me. A list of qualified candidates to replace the current PM, please!!!! May be someone of pure race? Let’s hear it!!!!
    Peace y’all!!!!

  12. One more suggestion to Obbo Dr. Yonas. I highly suggest to him that once again he take a look at my Oromos Moggaasas tradition. It sounds that he was misinformed about it. I suggest he find and talk to 2nd generation Amharas born and raised in Western Hararghe region. Their grandfathers, grandmothers along with their parents were all ‘moggaasized’ by my Itu clan after they moved into the region after 1875. Nobody forced them to abandon their ‘Amhara-ness’ and their mother tongue. Those at my age never talk to me in English whenever we see each other even though they are fluent in it. It has always been Afaan Oromoo. Revisit sir!

  13. Abiy has grown to be outrageous Machiavellian. He has no remorse, no sympathy/ empathy. He is a narcissist egomaniac.
He has proven that he has tplf and olf virus in his blood and he is making Ethiopia a hell on earth. It is proven that Oromo elites with their heartless leader Abiy are collaborating with their own enemy against Ethiopians.
In 2018 Abiy forged alliance with Oromo and Amhara to attack Tigray which he could never have done on his own without the collaboration of the Amhara.
The Amhara friendship did not continue and now he is forging alliance with tplf and Oromos to attack Amhara.
These temporarily befriending one ethnicity to attack the other one has to stop.
When someone is collaborating with his own arch enemy to kill innocent Ethiopians it is self-destructive to waste your time and energy wondering why!
As Dr Yonas mentioned his grass roots supporters are changing exponentially from ተደምረናል to ተቀንሰናል .
Enough is Enough! When Abiy and his Oromo Elites are pointing a gun at you, don’t just sit back and point the Cross at them. Even a sheep cries baaaa when one of the members is taken for a slaughter.
Amhara, Tigray, Oromo and all the 80+ ethnic groups in Ethiopia, wake up and know that you have the same righty as others to be human!

  14. Azbete Damesachew

From what I gathered this writer has an ax to grind with the PM and his administration. Someone told me that he was one of those so-called experts/scholars that were either shunned from being called to duty to help the country chart a new course economically and politically or after being invited all they have to offer was diatribe and endless lecture with no flesh to sink your teeth into. Just look at the poem he quoted that goes like ‘ነገሩ አልሆን ብሎ፣ ሁኔታው ሲጠጥር ጠጣሩ እንዲላላ፣ የላላውን ወጥር’. I just could stop laughing at it. It shows individuals like him still have their heads buried in the sand with outdated and destructive discourse style. He has driven himself so hateful of others he holds as enemies in his twisted imagination.

  15. Dr. Yonas, እንኳን ሲሸጡን -ሲያግባቡን እናውቃለን! Here is the Recipe to Run Ethiopia: Renounce your American citizenship, go to Ethiopia, run & win in election, become PM.

Ethiopia is doing just fine without your ‘Expert Advice’ AND despite the 2-year embargo & sanctions your paymaster White Supremacist West [WSW] imposed on Ethiopia.

Why would any Ethiopian trust you and the ‘PhDs’ you cited? You Cheap Opportunist Pigs [COPs] chose serving the WSW for the money to returning to serve poor Ethiopia.

You & Co. are just the WSW’s Wolves in Ethiopian Sheep’s clothing. Ethiopia is better off without the ‘Expert Advice’ from the WSW’s Economic Hitmen in Ethiopian Hats!

Here is your WSW masters’ ‘Expert Economic Plan’ for Ethiopia: Force Ethiopia to devalue its Birr to naught; deny Ethiopia loans/aid; impose embargo/sanctions; plunge Ethiopia in to insurmountable bankruptcy; reinstate TPLF and rule Ethiopia via Proxy.

Q: Abiy kept Ethiopia afloat despite all this https://youtu.be/Pg3WuF1eXww?t=5 What have you and your ‘PhD’ buddies done for Ethiopia?

  16. ABA FARDA,

You ask ” A list of qualified candidates to replace the current PM, … !!!! My answer is ABA (Anybody but Abiy).

    Cheers!

By the same token, I don’t expect anything better than what you scribbled from members and beneficiaries of former self-serving regimes who had fun seeing Ethiopians starve.

  17. Hi there,

It’s me again, I_Mognu who is Abiymanic. I admit that I can’t see beyind what Abiy poised to represent n 2018. I realize Abiymania is an affliction which blinds even reasonable people not to see the obvious. The country is at the verge of collape under the weight of genociders, war criminals, ethnic cleansers, human rights violators, etc. etc. The cover is dubbed “transitional justice” where all these criminals who are to join the government soon hug each other and continue politics as if nothing happened. I can’t see all these beause of Abiymania affliction. That makes me ኦነግ ሸኔ፣ ትግሬ ሸኔ፣

I’m laughable miserable creature. Look what I said above : ” Abiy … to feed his people and even producing wheat for export.” Even if I don’t live in the country, I know that close to 100% Ethiopians are malnourished and undernourished. I’m playing a cruel joke by suggesting that Abiy produces enough wheat to feed the population and export the excess. I don’t even know why I’m so brazen in my lies. I guess once you start it, it becomes a habit. I think I need serious help.

Excuse me! It’s like I’m in some kind of a hard drug when I write carelessly and hurriedly and post on this web page. I get such an incomprehensible urge to tackle, mock, undermine honest opinion and attack people who tell the truth. Once I did that, I get relief. Now, I realize it’s the mania. Look what I said in my last posting to attack opinion : ” scribbled from members and beneficiaries of former self-serving regimes”. Hallelujah! Who else is there than Abiy himself who is beneficiary of former regime? Who can I miss this except Abiymanic.

    Can anybody help?

  19. Some of the facts I observed/learned contradict some parts of comments posted above:

Although Haile-Selassie enjoyed massive support from the White Supremacist West [WSW], Ethiopia became synonymous with ‘Famine’, ‘Poster Child of Poverty’, etc.

The Derg didn’t fare better with support from the Socialist Block. TPLF with its massive support from the WSW only fooled us with its empty ‘Double Digit Economic Growth’.

Abiy took over a TPLF-ransacked Ethiopia rocked by ethnic riots, armed conflict, etc. Yet, he kept Ethiopia afloat despite the Egypt/WSW/TPLF-Sponsored war, COVID-19, the WSW’s embargo/sanctions, etc. He derailed TPLF’s repeated come-back efforts, too!

Abiy is also feeding about 10 million elementary and junior high school kids twice a day. Farm output is at an all time high! Electrification, industrialization, agricultural mechanization, wireless communication, transportation network, etc. are mostly on track.

So, Abiy fares far better than all his predecessors combined – AGAINST ALL ODDS!
