How do you define an ethnic government in power that negotiates with itself?

I am at a loss in understanding what is going on in Ethiopia now. Pretoria, Nairobi and now beautiful Zanzibar. Ethiopia is ruled by the Oromo Prosperity Party. Innocent civilians, most prominently Amhara, are slaughtered by the Oromo Liberation Army. I would have thought that victims will also be part of the negotiation team in Tanzania. Are they?

Reports from Ethiopia tell us that a prominent member of the Amhara Prosperity Party was just killed by unknown assailants. Is this an indication of things to come? The commentary below tells us ethnic elites are negotiating with one another; while core institutional and structural issues remain unaddressed.

Prominent historian part of OLA’s negotiation team with Ethiopia

A prominent Oromo historian is part of OLA’s negotiation team with the Ethiopian government.

The negotiation between the Ethiopian federal government and the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) in the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar is on its second day.

According to sources who spoke to the BBC, prominent Oromo Historian, Professor Mohammed Hassen is part of the negotiating team representing the OLA. The rest of the delegation includes Mr. Jirenya Gudata, adviser to the OLA’s central Command; Reverend Benti Ujulu; and Taha Abdi, founding member and former executive committee member of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF.)

The government’s negotiating team includes Gedion Timotheos, Justice Minister; Redwan Hussein, national security adviser; and Kefyalew Tefera, Deputy Director of Ethiopia’s Information Network Security Agency (INSA).

Previously, the peace talk between the two parties was set to take place in Kenya, but the Ethiopian government did not show up, according to Kumsa Diriba, the commander of OLA, also known by his nom de guerre ‘Jaal Marro’, who talked to the BBC.
Jaal Marroo the present commander of the Oromo Liberation Army

Jaal Marro said the OLA is prepared to reach an agreement with the Ethiopian government in the ongoing negotiation in Tanzania “in a way that answers the Oromo people’s political questions.”

“The demand of the Oromo people is not a matter for two or three people to decide. If we are to find a solution, the Oromo people must have a say as well,” he added.

The Ethiopian government under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been engaged in armed conflict against the OLA for the last four years, resulting from disagreements over the demands and rights of the Oromo people in Oromia, Ethiopia’s largest and most populous region.

The Ethiopian government designated the OLA as a terrorist organization alongside the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in May, 2021. It has since removed the TPLF  from its terror list while the designation on the OLA remains.

  1. Let’s hope and pray that this meeting will be the much needed catalyst to bring peace to beleaguered citizens of that country. I hope all sides would be able to overcome their prejudices and give peace and stability a chance in which those citizens will be able to go about their daily chores with out fear for their lives and those innocent poor farmers who have been displaced will be welcome back to their domiciles where they have lived for decades. The common citizen of Oromia never had any issues with them. They have been tilling their meager plots of land and harvesting their crops together for decades. Let’s preach for peace. Enough, enough, enough with war and destruction. And peace and stability Shall arrive for those noble and harmonious people of that country. Insha’Allah!!!

    1. Gracing us with your crocodile tears once more, Itu Aba Farda, are you?

You are working hard, tirelessly spreading confusion, and diffusion under the guise of reasonableness, and empathy for the victims.

In reality denying the victims a voice by deflecting responsibility from the perpetrators.

“All Sides” who are all sides? The Ethiopian government which is now completely by ODP led by Abiy Ahmed, is negotiating with the OLF an entity Armed and Supported by the ODP!

Who are the” innocent poor farmers who have been displaced”?

      Say their name!!!

They are Amhara farmers who were being displaced and killed in the most gruesome way by the ODP controlled OLF, that is who!

It is the most ridiculous negotiation ever, in the world! Who are you kidding, who are they kidding?

      1. If you don’t or are refusing to acknowledge it, there are also many Oromos who are killed and displaced by bigots roaming that part of the country. You should lay back and try to do a research and learn about the history of the people of that country as to who they were and who are they now. But in the meantime you should embrace the noble idea of standing behind those who are trying to bring peace and stability to those besieged harmonious people they have been denied since 1974. The pill that has to be swallowed for sake of peace and stability was not always palatable. In fact it could be bitter but is always a noble act. It seems that you are hell bent in your conviction that Abiy and every Oromo over there is a founder and supporter of the OLF. In your mind every Oromo is a bigot. Sir, that ain’t no different from those bigots among my own Oromos who think every Amhara is the oppressor and by extension he/she is a committed enemy of all Oromos like me. In your world of conviction I am a committed supporter of PM Abiy and will remain so no matter what just because I am an Oromo. To you that is a giveaway. Come, come dear countryman. Come, come!!!

I don’t usually respond to hapless trolls but I am doing so here thinking/hoping that you are not one of those commies that ushered an era of death and destruction upon that gem of the colored since the early 1970’s.

  2. Amhara and tigrea people have colonize the rest of Ethiopian for 2000 years
now the others ( Somali Afar Oromo) want to take revenge .

  3. Ethiopian situation is very tragic and I hope the current leadership will pay for all the misery they created to these once peace loving, generous, and god fearing people of Ethiopia. The goal is to make sure divide and rule. Historically, Ethiopian people, always stand together at home or abroad only when they are faced with adversity that will affect their livelihood, or pride. The sad thing is that they now were made to believe by its cruel and selfish leaders about their individual ethnicity and slaughter one another more than being an Ethiopian, which was what kept them as free people. Now what? Hope they wake up before it is too late and say no to ethnicity and embrace their Ethiopianism once again.
God bless Ethiopia and it’s people!✌🏽
