In Kenya, Deputy Secretary Zeya is scheduled to hold meetings with high-ranking government officials, representatives from civil society, and alumni of U.S. exchange programs. The purpose of these meetings is to further enhance the enduring 60-year partnership between the United States and Kenya, with a focus on collaborative initiatives to reinforce the rule of law, combat corruption, and promote government transparency.

In addition to discussing cooperative approaches to regional and global issues, she will emphasize the significance of the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, while also highlighting U.S. backing for democratic transformations and the inclusion of refugees in society.

In Ethiopia, Under Secretary Zeya is scheduled to meet with officials from the Ethiopian government, African Union, and civil society to discuss human rights protection across the country, the significance of inclusive and transparent transitional justice, and the enhancement of safeguards for refugees, displaced individuals, and humanitarian workers. Furthermore, the Under Secretary will tour a refugee center that offers child protection, education, and healthcare services to highlight the United States’ commitment to assisting refugees and their host communities, as the primary contributor of humanitarian aid to Ethiopia.
