The IMF and World Bank are Complicit in Abiy’s Extravaganza

July 23, 2024
It is disheartening to me and millions of Black Africans that their governments squander resources, commit economic and other crimes with a ;level of unprecedented impunity in the 21st century!!
Ethiopia is among them. The below analysis by the Continent informs the international community that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is diverting scarce budgetary resources constructing a huge palace, resorts and the like at a time when at least 20 million Ethiopians go hungry each day and millions of young people suffer from lack of education.  Estimated to cost between a minimum of $10 billion and up to $15 billion, the Chaka project is a luxury Ethiopia cannot afford. Ethiopia’s 2024/2025 budget is estimated at $17 billion.
What irks me most is that Bretton Woods institutions–theIMF and the World Bank–continue to avail loans and credits to the Abiy regime without demanding transparency and accountability. Is this not political rather than developmental?
