Lt. Gen. Tadesse Werede, head of the Tigray Interim Regional Administration, has reiterated his government’s unwavering support for both the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and the people of Tigray. Speaking to regional media this week, the general emphasized that the leadership remains committed to rebuilding war-torn communities and restoring areas under dispute, including Welkait, which he suggested would soon be “reintegrated” into Tigray.

In remarks reported by Zehabesha.com, Gen. Tadesse underscored that his administration has “no operational or political ties with the Fano forces” active in the Amhara region. He called the ongoing rumors about coordination between Tigrayan and Amhara militias “baseless fabrications” intended to sow mistrust between communities.

Observers note that the statement comes at a time of renewed tension between Tigray’s interim authorities and the federal government in Addis Ababa, particularly regarding border demarcations and the implementation of the Pretoria Peace Agreement. According to Zehabesha.com’s analysis, the general’s remarks highlight both an attempt to consolidate regional unity and a message of defiance toward any actors perceived as threatening Tigray’s territorial integrity.

Political analysts contacted by Zehabesha interpret the reference to Welkait as a deliberate signal to reassure displaced Tigrayans that the issue remains on the administration’s agenda. Others argue it risks reopening a sensitive debate that could undermine fragile stability in northern Ethiopia.

While Gen. Tadesse expressed continued loyalty to the federal constitution, he also reiterated that Tigray must be allowed to exercise its administrative rights “without external interference.” His remarks have reignited discussion over whether the federal government’s integration plans for local security forces are compatible with regional autonomy.

As reported by Zehabesha.com, the general’s statements reflect the persistent political complexity in post-war Tigray—where reconstruction, reconciliation, and the question of Welkait’s final status remain deeply intertwined with Ethiopia’s broader struggle for peace and unity.
