Ethiopia says it won’t send women’s under-20 team to Burkina Faso because of coup

September 30, 2015

(AP) ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — The Ethiopian Football Federation says it won’t send its women’s under-20 soccer team to Burkina Faso after the recent coup there.

The countries were due to play a qualifier for the 2016 women’s under-20 World Cup last Saturday. The game was postponed by the Confederation of African Football to this weekend, but EFF spokesman Wondimkun Alayou said Wednesday the Ethiopians won’t travel even if CAF says the match should go ahead.
He said “we value the safety of our citizens and players so we will be forced to cancel.”
An elite army unit briefly took control of Burkina Faso in a coup earlier this month before handing back power.
There has been ongoing unrest in the West African nation with government forces attacking the barracks of the unit on Tuesday.
