During a heated African Cup of Nations qualifier, controversy erupted after Egyptian fans were caught using laser pointers to distract Ethiopia’s goalkeeper. Television footage and images circulated widely on social media showed bright green beams directed at the Ethiopian shot-stopper during crucial moments of the match.
The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) condemned the act, describing it as unsportsmanlike behavior that endangered player safety and compromised the fairness of the game. In response, the EFF has officially filed a formal complaint to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), demanding an investigation and possible sanctions against Egypt.
Laser pointer incidents have been a recurring problem in international football, with CAF and FIFA previously warning host nations about crowd control and fair play responsibilities. The Ethiopian side insists that stronger disciplinary measures are needed to prevent similar acts in future matches.
CAF is expected to review the complaint in the coming days.
