(TH) – Lydia Tesfa, PhD, aged 58, of Lansing, New York, departed this life peacefully at her residence on August 18, 2024, with her family by her side. Her work and influence spanned numerous fields, including immunology and infectious diseases, and she was widely recognized for her contributions to science and the Ethiopian diaspora.
Dr. Lydia Tesfa was a distinguished scientist known for her groundbreaking work in immunology and infectious diseases. Born and raised in Ethiopia, she moved to the United States to further her education and career. Dr. Tesfa earned her Ph.D. in Immunology and pursued a successful career in research, contributing significantly to the understanding of immune responses to various diseases.
Beyond her scientific achievements, Dr. Tesfa was a passionate advocate for the Ethiopian diaspora and worked tirelessly to promote education, healthcare, and community development both in Ethiopia and abroad. She was involved in numerous initiatives aimed at improving access to healthcare and fostering scientific collaboration between Ethiopia and other countries.
Dr. Lydia Tesfa was also known for her mentorship and dedication to nurturing the next generation of scientists. She inspired many young professionals to pursue careers in science and medicine, particularly those from underrepresented communities.
Her passing in 2024 was a significant loss to the scientific community and the Ethiopian diaspora. Dr. Tesfa’s legacy continues to inspire those who knew her and those who have benefited from her work.
She was born on September 28, 1965, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to Melikit Daba and the late Tesfa Bushen, who played significant roles in shaping her early life and academic pursuits.
In 2019, Lydia joined Cornell University, where she utilized her vast knowledge in flow cytometry and infectious diseases, assuming the role of director of the Flow Cytometry Facility, thereby contributing greatly to the scientific community.
Lydia is mourned by her devoted husband, Aklilu Seyoum-Awoke, residing in Lansing, NY, along with her beloved daughter, Kilole Aklilu, who lives in Manhattan, New York. She is also survived by her cherished siblings: Sibasiben Bushen from Maryland, VA, Adey Tesfa from Utrecht, Netherlands, and Tedenekialish Bushen from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

I so saddened to read that the death of Dr. Lydia Tesfa whom i have known her as student in central Europe. We departed from Ethiopia to Germany more than two decades ago for PhD study. My condolences and prayer goes to her entire family. May her soul rest in Eternal Peace. Nigatu chaffo.
