Ato Zemedeneh Negatu and Ethiopian Airlines: Truths, Lies, and the Case for Transparency

August 28, 2024

The inquiry into whether Ato Zemedeneh Negatu’s assertions regarding his role in the privatization of Ethiopian Airlines constitute defamation is a pressing issue that warrants thorough examination. In continuation of my previous article titled “Open Letter to Ethiopian Airlines: Uncovering the Truth: Why is Ethiopian Airlines Hiding its Privatization?”, this piece seeks to further explore the complexities and implications of the claims made by Ato Negatu, shedding light on the surrounding secrecy and the broader context of the airline’s privatization efforts.

As a steadfast advocate for Ethiopian Airlines in the face of defamation and slander, I feel it is my duty to approach this significant matter with objectivity and critical analysis, refraining from making any unfounded accusations or assertions. My prior writings reflect my dedication to upholding accuracy and truthfulness. Nevertheless, the lack of transparency regarding the privatization of Ethiopian Airlines has raised concerns that necessitate thorough investigation.

Zemedeneh Negatu, CPA, Global Chairman of Fairfax Africa Fund, and frequent guest onthe Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation(EBC), claims to have played a significant role in the privatization and restructuring of Ethiopian Airlines. According to an article published on August 1, 2024, onEmpower Africa’s news website, Zemedeneh asserts that under his guidance, Ethiopian Airlines has become one of Africa’s most successful and profitable carriers.

The ongoing “privatization” process of Ethiopian Airlines has not been made public, which raises significant issues regarding transparency and accountability. As a government-owned entity, Ethiopian Airlines is obligated to maintain openness with its stakeholders, particularly the Ethiopian populace. The lack of clarity surrounding this matter is concerning and could potentially mislead both stakeholders and the general public.

In light of Zemedeneh Negatu’s assertion regarding his role in the privatization of Ethiopian Airlines, one must question whether this statement constitutes a misrepresentation of facts, a breach of trust, or even defamation. It is imperative for Ethiopian Airlines to address these concerns and ensure that there is clear communication regarding the status of its privatization efforts. Transparency in this matter is essential to uphold the trust of its stakeholders and the public at large.

Stay tuned for further updates as I continue to uncover the truth.
