HE Moussa Faki Chairperson of the African Union

Dear HE Moussa Faki,

We extend our utmost respect and appreciation for your concern regarding the escalating crisis in North Ethiopia. In addressing the root causes of this crisis, we believe it imperative to provide historical insights from reliable sources.

The current crisis in Ethiopia stems from a deeply flawed administrative system, devised by colonial powers, which divides the Ethiopian people along ethnic lines. Such a system, unique to Ethiopia, lacks precedent in democratic nations worldwide. It is within Ethiopia alone that we witness the existence of ethnically segmented regional states, established under the auspices of a failed federal system engineered by the former TPLF regime.

A genuine federal governance structure should serve the interests of all citizens without bias or discrimination. Regrettably, the current Ethiopian federal system has marginalized the Amhara ethnic group, with purported representation provided by former EPRP Marxist faction members who are unfit to represent the Amhara people.

Meanwhile, prominent figures advocating for the rights of the Amhara, such as the late Professor Asrat Woldeyes, founder of the first Ethiopian medical college, continue to be subject to ethnic vilification and cleansing by various rebel groups, including the incumbent ruling party, Prosperity Party (formerly known as OPDO).

We humbly request your intervention, as mandated by the UN, to delve deeper into the root causes of the Ethiopian crisis. A genuine examination of these underlying issues and the timely recommendation of inclusive solutions, involving representatives from all major ethnic groups, is essential. This approach can pave the way for ending the ongoing hostilities fueled by ethnic rivalries in Ethiopia, thereby safeguarding the integrity of our ancient nation, Ethiopia—the birthplace of the African Union and a pioneer in the establishment of both the League of Nations and the United Nations.

Sincerely,

Ethiopian American Council Nebraska, United States of America

  1. Great writing! Short and to the point. I wish they had included the invitation from the UN Security Council to address the situation in Ethiopia. Nevertheless, it was the best presentation.
