Statement on current developments by the Amhara Fano People’s Organaization (AFPO)

January 26, 2025

The Amhara Fano People’s Organization (AFPO) proudly represents the armed resistance of the Amhara people a movement born out of necessity in the face of systemic Genocide, state-sponsored violence, and deliberate political exclusion. Today, we amplify the voices of the Amhara people on the global stage, as we have formally presented our plight and demands to the technical teams of the African Union, European Union, USAID, and IGAD.

The atrocities committed against the Amhara are not just an Ethiopian tragedy; they are a global human rights crisis that demands immediate and decisive action. Mass killings, forced displacements, cultural erosion, and economic disenfranchisement have devastated our communities, leaving millions vulnerable and defenseless. The Ethiopian regime, through its complicit policies and brutal tactics, has abandoned its legitimacy and stands as an obstacle to peace, justice, and equality.

As the AFPO, we have taken up arms to defend our people from annihilation and to fight for justice, freedom, and the survival of our people. Our resistance is rooted in the principles of self-determination, the right to exist with dignity, and the vision of a unified Ethiopia built on equality and democracy.

We call upon the international community to act with urgency:

1. Recognize the Genocide and Atrocities: Acknowledge the systemic Genocide against the Amhara people and classify these acts as crimes against humanity.

2. Hold Perpetrators Accountable: Demand independent investigations into the atrocities and ensure that those responsible face justice.

3. Support the Struggle for Freedom: Provide moral, political, and material support to the AFPO and the Amhara people in our pursuit of self-determination and equality.

4. Reassess Support for the Current Government: Recognize that the current Ethiopian regime is illegitimate and complicit in crimes against humanity. Support efforts to dismantle this oppressive regime and establish a transitional government that upholds justice, democracy, and the rights of all citizens.

The AFPO is resolute in its mission to protect the Amhara people and to build a future where no Ethiopian lives in fear of oppression. We will resist until a new, inclusive government is established one that respects the dignity, rights, and freedoms of all Ethiopians.

The time for action is now. The international community must stand in solidarity with the Amhara people and take decisive steps to end the atrocities, ensure justice, and support the creation of a just and democratic Ethiopia. Together, we can dismantle tyranny, restore human dignity, and forge a nation where equality and peace prevail.
