It is a devastating tragedy. The loss of so many lives in the landslides in southern Ethiopia is heart-wrenching. In a remote, mountainous area, residents were observed using their bare hands to sift through the dirt in search of survivors. Authorities reported that over 200 individuals lost their lives in two separate landslides in southern Ethiopia. The initial landslide, caused by intense rainfall in a secluded part of the Gofa zone, took place on Monday, followed by a subsequent one that tragically engulfed individuals who had come to offer assistance, as stated by government officials on Tuesday.
The local Communications Affairs Department stated that a total of 148 men and 81 women lost their lives following the disaster that occurred in the Kencho-Shacha area within the Gofa Zone on Monday.
The confirmation of the death toll and the ongoing search and rescue efforts serve as a stark reminder of the seriousness of the situation at hand. It is a heartbreaking situation where individuals who selflessly offered their assistance ended up becoming victims themselves.
Alemayehu Bawdi, the Southern Regional State representative, officially confirmed the number of casualties, while five survivors are currently undergoing medical treatment.
Among the victims were many rescuers who responded promptly after the initial landslide, including the local administrator, teachers, health professionals, and agricultural experts.\
In a statement, Dagemawi Ayele, the local administrator, emphasized the tragic loss of life among those who courageously stepped forward to help.

Woe, woe, woe!!! My heart bleeds with sorrow for my beloved people. This is nobody’s fault. Landslides occur everywhere including in the most developed countries.
