The demographic of impoverished individuals, totaling 1.1 billion, is distributed across 112 countries within a global population of 6.3 billion. A significant portion, nearly half (48.2 percent), resides in Sub-Saharan Africa, amounting to approximately 553 million individuals. Additionally, over a third (35.0 percent) of those living in poverty are found in South Asia, which accounts for around 402 million people. Collectively, these two regions encompass 83.2 percent of the global poor, while smaller percentages are observed in East Asia and the Pacific (9.1 percent, or 104 million), the Arab States (4.6 percent, or 53 million), Latin America and the Caribbean (3.0 percent, or 34 million), and Europe and Central Asia (0.2 percent, or 2 million).
Countries exhibiting the lowest Human Development Index (HDI) values are often characterized by the highest Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) values and significant proportions of their populations living in poverty. Notably, a substantial number of impoverished individuals also reside in countries with medium HDI rankings. Approximately 53.3 percent of the global poor inhabit low HDI nations, which equates to over 613 million individuals. For instance, countries such as Niger (2012), Chad (2019), the Central African Republic (2018/2019), Burundi (2016/2017), Madagascar (2021), Mali (2018), Guinea (2018), Ethiopia (2019), Afghanistan (2022/2023), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (2017/18), and Burkina Faso (2021) demonstrate high MPI values, with poverty rates ranging from 64.5 to 91.0 percent among their populations.
The five nations with the highest populations living in poverty are India, with 234 million individuals and a medium Human Development Index (HDI), followed by Pakistan at 93 million, Ethiopia at 86 million, Nigeria at 74 million, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo at 66 million, all of which have a low HDI. Collectively, these five countries represent almost half, specifically 48.1 percent, of the total 1.1 billion people classified as poor.

Here you have it! Eritrea is not on the list. You know why? That is because it has no poverty at all. All its citizens earn income that puts them well above the poverty line. Its GDP is above Singapore and Monaco. These more than 250,000 refugees in camps in Ethiopia who claim to be from Eritrea are not true Eritreans. They are Tigres, Oromos and Amharas.
