Parliament member Christian Tadele has been imprisoned for more than two years without ever being formally charged. His prolonged detention without due process is not only a violation of Ethiopia’s own constitution but also a breach of international human rights conventions, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), to which Ethiopia is a signatory.

What makes his situation even more alarming is the denial of medical care despite his serious health problems. This neglect puts his life in immediate danger and represents cruel and inhumane treatment. Such practices should alarm the global human rights community and demand urgent attention.

Christian Tadele’s case highlights a disturbing pattern of arbitrary detention, where political prisoners are held indefinitely without charges or trial. His ongoing health crisis is compounded by the refusal to provide him with adequate medical treatment, which underscores the gravity of the violations being committed. These actions not only undermine the rule of law but also erode Ethiopia’s commitments under international law, particularly the right to health, the right to due process, and protection against inhumane treatment.

We call upon Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and all relevant human rights organizations to immediately investigate the current state of Christian Tadele’s health and the conditions under which he is being held. He must be given access to medical care by independent doctors without delay. Furthermore, the Ethiopian government must be pressed to either release him or ensure a fair and transparent judicial process that respects international standards of justice.

This case is not only about one parliament member—it reflects a wider pattern of political repression and the silencing of dissent in Ethiopia. If left unchallenged, it sets a dangerous precedent that endangers all citizens who seek accountability, justice, and democratic governance.

Every day without medical treatment puts Christian Tadele’s life at greater risk. Each day of silence emboldens further abuses. The international community must act now—before it is too late.
