The Critical Health Condition of Respected Ato Christian Tadele

September 16, 2025

This is urgent information from the family!!

This is an urgent call from the family of Ato Christian Tadele, a respected member of the public and parliament, whose health condition has deteriorated to a critical stage while in detention.

According to his family, prison authorities have placed severe restrictions on his diet, forbidding him from receiving essential nutritional items such as honey, milk, and other liquids necessary for his recovery. In addition, the timely delivery of critical medicines has been obstructed, leaving his health in constant jeopardy.

Following major surgery, Ato Christian has been struggling with recurring complications, including cancer. His doctors have urgently recommended radiation therapy abroad, stressing that local facilities are inadequate to address his worsening condition. Despite these repeated appeals — some made in tears by his medical team — the prison administration has refused to authorize treatment.

The conditions of his detention have further aggravated his illness. The unhygienic and uncomfortable environment, including the lack of proper sanitation, has accelerated his suffering instead of allowing recovery. Making matters worse, family visits — which previously took place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays — have now been completely suspended, further isolating him in his time of dire need.

Ato Christian is also battling additional co-morbid illnesses, heightening the risks to his life. His family has issued an urgent plea to the public, human rights organizations, and the international community to pressure the authorities to allow immediate medical treatment. Without swift action, the danger to his life will only worsen.

“We ask, in the name of the Creator, to stand with our brother who is enduring unbearable suffering,” the family appeals.

This case reflects a broader pattern of neglect and denial of medical care for political prisoners, raising urgent questions about human rights and dignity in Ethiopia today.
