Thanks to the VOA and the journalist who raised the interesting questions.
Eventually, the central question is “what is the end goal of the OLF and Jawar M. and his media outlet”? Do they want to separate Oromia or struggle for democracy in Ethiopia? If they say, it is for democracy in Ethiopia, they would have won the hearts and minds of all Ethiopians enabled Ethiopia to emocratize quickly. Saying that the question is left for the decison of the Oromo people is meaningless. Again, the question is what is the position of OLF and Jewar and co.? They don’t want to answer the question. In fact, Ethiopians including Oromos know full well that ” decison of the Oromo people” is a code phrase for an Eritrean type referendum on self-determination which will end up in separation. If OLD and Jawar are not saying their struggle is for democracy, it means it is for separation. No Ethiopian including Oromos will be fooled by this lying by omission.
What OLF and Jawar failed to realize is that Ethiopia is a resilient state that cannot be undone.
Harold G. Marcus in his book “A history of Ethiopia” says the following:
“As I watched the intellectual mayhem and continued an analytical truth validating my decision to consider Ethiopia’s wider geographic limits as my canvas from time to time, the nation had disintegrated into component parts, but it never disappeared as an idea and always reappeared in fact.”
I will add Prof. Haile Larebo’s article that appeared on Ethiomedia today under the title “ከታሪክ መድረክ – ለመሆኑ የብሔር ብሔረሰብ ጭቈና በኢትዮጵያ ነበር ወይ?” which is instructive on the matter.
Wherever it comes from, from a tiny state like Eritrea or bigger force like Egypt or any state across the Red Sea, Ethiopia will never disintegrate and disappear. Whatever is happening right now will give way to renewed national unity owing to geography, history, economics, culture and family ties provided it is handled with a vision free from selfish motives.
Pesrsonally, as part of our vision for the future, I suggest that we UPHOLD THE CONSTITUTION. The constitution, no matter how it was drafted and approved, is a document on which all parties claiming to have stake in the future of the country can agree on to use as a working document. Amending it to deal with emerging problems of the country can be delayed for now.
Most people who reject the constitution have not read it or only know about specific provisions they do not approve. My suggestion is to READ it and re-READ it looking for all its positive elements such as respect of democratic and human rights. If an agreement can be reached to use it by all who claim to be stake holders (including the opposition and the government) as a working document, there will be no need for a transitional government which will be filled by ethnic groups or even a transition.
If the constitution is upheld by all parties, a new government can successfully take office from the exisitng government via election. The exisiting government should continue until the next election which is three years from now while talking to different stake holders and giving assurance both to the international community and the opposition that the next election will be truly free and fair.
If such assurances are given, the good works that have been carried out and are done now by the exisitng government can be continued and people will not lose their livelihood to irrisponsible acts of protesters.
As to me, governments – both federal and regional – will have to stay in office until the next election and enforce law and order including the state of emergencey. Without keeping the existing governments, there will be no law and order and the future of the country will be usurped by armed gangs such as the OLF.
If the OLF that declared an all out war on the non-Oromo people in general and regional and federal governments in particular with intent to separate Oromia from Ethiopia persists, then the governments – both regioanl and federal – are justified to protect the territorial integrity of the country. Self-determination is a right guaranteed by the constitution which can only be pursued by constitutional means.
Eliminating movements working to dismember an exisitng state under the guise of self-determination is legal under international law including UN and AU charters. The right to self-determination is still secondary to ensuring territorial integrity of a state which international law considers sacrosanct. Long pracitices of the international community show that a state that fails to keep their constitutent parts (district, province, region, state, etc.) are not upto expectations of the community. It is something the community disapproves of – though it does not openly state it.
Here is an example. The recent defeat of Tamil Tigers who fought for decades to separate Tamil from Sri Lanka was not condemned by the international community. The only concern raised by some states relates to violation of Geneva conventions relating the conduct of war and lack of respect of fundamental rights during the war. Simply said, use of force to stamp out separatisit war is a regular state duty supported by the international community which no one should be afraid to talk about.
The message is to OLF (Jawar and co. too) who lately talks about going it alone by marshalling their own army and introducing charter by hiding their final goal. What’s surprising is the talk about Oromia being a colony hoping that the rules pertaining to keeping territorial integrity does not apply to Oromia. OLF (Jawar too) cannot convince anyone on this issue.
If, by some miracle OLF (with Jawar and co.) separate Oromia from Ethiopia which might be a couple of decades away, it does not mean Oromia will be a state in the real sense of the term even if it holda a referendum and say “yes” to separation. It simply means one chapter is closed and another opened.
Once Oromia is separate Ethiopia will be cut into its regions to the west, north, north-east, east-east on one side and its regions to the South on the other. After the separation, the west, north, north-east and east-east regions will be successors of the present Ethiopian state that includes Oromia. These regions are Binshagul- Gumuz, Tigray, Amara, Harar, Afar and Somali regions. Gambella and the South will be cut by Oromia to the south to form part of the new Ethiopian successor state to the north. With this fact on the ground, a new struggle begins.
Without the recogntion of the new successor Ethiopian state Oromia will not stand as an indepenedent state among the family of nations. Ethiopia and Sudan recognized Eritrea and South Sudan respectively to let them emerge as new states without which the latter would have remained as Somaliland in Somalia. Despite de facto independence for over twenty years, the international community has denied de jure existence of Somaliland simply because recognition has to come from a state in Somalia. In fact, even if weak, lack of recognition of Somaliland as an independent state by the exisiting governemnt in Somalia has effectively stopped Somalia’s disintegration.
Like the government in Somalia, the new government in the Ethiopian state that succeeds after the separation of Oromia will stop Oromia from emerging as a state. This is for OLF (and Jawar) who claim to lead the Oromo to indepnendence. The future is rough than you might think.
Instead, there is a bright political future for Oromia in Ethiopia if OLF and Jawar come clean about their dishonest talk of “the Oromo people deciding their future” and endorse the larger struggle for democracy.
No space for divisive rhetoric!
Both Daud and Jawar are Oromo Leaders. We adore them both, period!!
That is your usual voice. So millions of us Oromos uphold the truth that the move of OLF is the most dangerous and unworkable. we have advised them quite a number of times. How can you move with such detesteful, horrific, unrealistic and extremely hating politics. For that fact, OLF is harboured by Shabia and Egypt both of whom are our enemies who do have strong desire and have planned to sow an endless civil war among Oromos, among other grousp of Ethiopia such as between Amhara & Tigire, Amhara & Oromo, Tigre & Oromo etc.
Dear Tola and others
Do not take our comments lightly, we are Oromos. Yes we understand and know, the past marginalization on us, the past ill-treatment on us, but to bring a sustainable and real solution, our struggle is bring lasting solution to all Ethiopians. Those stuborn OLFs- are now exposed. They are mercenaries of destruction and disintegration. In fact, there are so many of these groups (many many olfs). We should not make ourselves saint. So many Oromos leaders- killed thousands of people, oppressed millions of Ethiopians. OLF leaders will undoubtly come to the International court sooner or latter for the massacre (very barbaric and cruel) in Harrarge, Arsi, Bale and other parts of the country against non-Oromos.
The fact is we Oromos, with the rest of Non-Oromos will now intensify our struggle to fight this OLF. We have been quite, but now we see their face. For the sake of peace, integrity and unity of our country, we have no choise, but to stand with the rest of Ethiopia to end the lifes of OLF and Shabia.
Do not think that those who protest and scarified their lives (knowingly or unowingly) are supporting your outdated politics, rather they were against the poor governance/bureaucracy. We know who Dawud and Jawar are (both Muslims-with a hidden Islamic Oromia agenda.
We rasied these questions to them, but they failed to answer
1) where is the clear boarder line between Amhara and Oromo? Tigre and Oromo? Somali and Oromo?; Afar and Oromo? South and Oromo? (if they had brain to reason-they should have answered. Obvious, there will be endless war with the neighbors.
2) Undoutly, Islamic Oromia state is on the table (I am very sure-with 50% Islam religion in the region- I met some of them before)-Oromia could be the havens of Jihadist terrorists
3)Majority of the Oromos are against your political visions and agenda
4) Oromo leaders are also responsible for the problems that we have been facing for generations, and so will this problem be even worse subjecting Oromos to further oppression (take e.g. of Shabia)
5) We Oromos and other ethnic groups have strong bondage biologically, culturally, economically etc. which is unlikely to separate.
May God Bless Ethiopia and her people.
I have been telling you all a million times before. The real objective of these individuals is to yank away a territory that they will call their own fiefdom. Nothing less and nothing real ‘liberating’ of people!!! One is trying very hard that he is the ‘real’, bona fide Oromo because he is not sure of himself. He reminds of the late Sheik Said Abiyo from the 1950’s. Are any one of you old enough to remember what that ‘Sheik Tulbee’ was doing then? He was so enticing that it looked the entire Western Hararghe was on the move following him where ever he was traveling. Women used to leave the products they took to the markets to sell behind and just go with him. I remember him coming to our village on a market day and almost every woman in the market got up and left with him. And when they returned home they were welcomed by angry husbands and hungry children. That was not all. Sheik Said Abiyo has impregnated some of them. His legend was spreading like wild wire until the elders got together and warned him not to come back ever again. He then went to Arsi and Bale areas where he became a de facto leader. He was not even an Oromo. He was part Hawiye and part something else. He thought he could carve out a territory in Arsi and Bale region that he grew complacent. Then he was caught flapping his mouths applauding the new nation of Somalia. The late emperor found out about it and he sent his sorry behind to the slammer. Now he is incarnated and his incarnation is sending the Oromo youth to a waiting inferno and never ending frigid cold jails. He is also arousing and instructing the youth to march into factories where thousands of Oromos are making a living and burn them down. That is not enough. He also told the youth to stone every vehicle insight that is heading to or leaving the capital. That is by his own admission. Then an innocent young American was stoned to death. Now I have to live with another stigma that she was stoned by Oromo that Oromos stone women just like ISIS and Al Shabaab. Just imagine how you would feel if that young American student who was savagely stone to death is your daughter, sister, cousin, relative or a school friend. Agony, right? Agony that will not leave you for years to come. That is what her parents, spouse and loved ones are going through now. The one who ordered her death is right here among them and the other one is munching down his lasagna in ‘Piccolo Roma; with Al-Toweel Isaias. I believe the family of that innocent American citizen take this individual, Ibsa and the regime back in the old country to court here in the USA. I can tell you this. These two are very lucky that she was not my daughter. But that is what the grieving family should do. Let these explain in court why they instruct the youth they aroused and organized to stone or why they did not instruct the youth nor to stone . You see. Once you cook the food there is no one else to claim the praise or the blame. You cooked it and you are responsible for the consequences. The regime back home holds responsibility for putting the youth is such vulnerable situation to be scavenged by emotion predators. That is what I would even if I am just a relative. I have lived with undeserved stigma that ‘Oromos kill Christians’ since the day Ibsa’s armed gangs rampaged thru the highlands of Hararghe and Arsi and slaughtered innocent farmers. I know how their loved ones feel because I saw how my late friend agonized and grieved upon the news that one of the victims was the husband of her close relative who she regarded him as her uncle. I still remember the day she called me wailing on the phone. I used to call her tigi and she is not with us anymore. He uncle was stoned and hacked to death. I still feel enraged and ashamed that such barbaric crime was committed in my name. And now this? And he is talking of forming an army? Ibsa already has an army and he has passed death sentence on every civil servant over there. Others are forewarned by ‘Ethiopia out of Oromia’ skin heads style slogan!!! You leave now or otherwise…. That is why all these websites among the Diaspora should put the feet of these two individual gripped by some demonic spirit to the fire now. If you just keep giving them the slack you are not doing your journalistic duties. That country and people do not need another destructive civil war. They have been there and done that already. They had lost hundreds of thousands of their young generation in destructive civil wars before. Individuals like these two individuals should be cornered and alienated. That also goes the same with the regime back home. The way that very capable female reporter asked the questions was commendable. But I can feel here worries also. She might have worried that she would be called derogatory names like ‘chauvinist nefetgna’ by these loose mouthed miscreants. Now we all know who the leader and coordinator of the stone hurling and arson. They are on the record. I want everyone of you concerned compatriots to download and save this interview. It is a very valuable criminal record. It is the Actus Reus and a perfect Mens Rea!!! Period!!! Full Stop!!! No ifs or butts about it!!!!
Dear Dadi (may be you meant Daadhi) and Ittu Aba Farda,
Why all these gibberish? We are certain that you are ready to fight the OLF and we have no fear of you in this regard. We know that you have never supported it and there is none that you are going to withdraw. OLF has endured all the barrages you and the likes of you had been raining on it. We have been in war for so long and there is no any gear that we need to change, we are used to it.
Let me repeat the disclaimer: Dawud Ibsa and Jawar Mohamed are Oromo Leaders. We adore them!!
I have been called Dadi not what you stupid and arrogant has brought. Teach yourself. yes, We will fight you and wipe you out. we know you are few. God is on our side. Such extremitism can’t be tolerated. OLF is not for Oromo and Ethiopia. You are just doing this out of false history and hatred. We will fight and bury you. Olf did mass genocide and every member is under ICC investigation.

Please, Ethiopia = more than 80 authentic identities (culture +language + sociology + etc) + > 100 mln minds/outlooks on the future.
Thus, we need to be accommodative and sensitive.
Categorization and segregation such as this can only serve TPLF. The future Ethiopia should be formed with due involvement of all active ideas and with due involvement of the larger population.
The change should not be alike the last two governmental transitions. No, politicians and/or activists should not come with a packet of illusion/vision and enforce it on the people of Ethiopia.
No, there should be a longer reformation rather transition period during which we make our future together.
Every idea and wish should not be condemned at the outset!!!
