The Woyane Led Political Drama in Sealite Mariam Church in Atlanta Has Reached New Heights

“Of a truth, God will not do wickedly, and the Almighty will not pervert justice.” Job 34:12
Introduction:

On a letter dated 06/07/2016 and entitled ‘Stop the Unwelcome and Unfortunate Political Drama at Sealite Mihret Kidist Mariam Cathedral of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Atlanta’, we the concerned members of the church shared our concerns about the issues that are impacting our church to all our fellow Ethiopians. These concerns emanated from the continues and unfortunate attempts by certain members of the administrative Board of our church who are directly coordinating with the dictatorship in Ethiopia. The Board has now continued to make decisions against the rules of the church while also disregarding the laws that govern administrative issues of the church that are clearly indicated in the Fitha Negest and Kale Awadis of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church.

Background:
Sealite Mihret Kidist Mariam Cathedral of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church is one of the oldest churches in Metro Atlanta area and has been a holy place whereby all Ethiopians regardless of their background and upbringing receive the words of the Holy Bible, pray to and praise the almighty God in unison. Since about three years ago however, the atmospheres of love and unity in Sealite Mihret suddenly changed when the board hired a young and charismatic monk, named Aba Haile Michael, who directly came from the Middle East as a new administrator of the church. Unfortunately, since then, the love and unity within the members of our church has deteriorated. This new administrator directly challenged the church members by openly advocating and calling for the church to abandon the Holy Synod in exile and start to work with the illegal one in Ethiopia. Moreover, Aba Haile Michael branded our Holy Father, Abune Yaekob and all our fathers in the holy synod in exile, by labelling them the word, tehadso, which is extremely saddening. Few months ago, this new administrator finally resigned by saying that he was not able to continue his work in the church due to the conflicts he has with our holy father, Abune Yaekob and the holy synod in exile. This however, was a coordinated ploy with some of the board members who now used his resignation as a pretext or sad rational to come up with other name callings that further target our Holy Synod and Abune Yaekob.
What Happened Now?
The attempts by the board to take over the church, to disassociate our church from its ties with the Holy Synod in exile and to act on their interest to align with the dictatorial regime and the illegal Synod in Ethiopia have now become apparent. This Board, which is led by Mr. Abate Zewde and other individuals who have been playing a very unfortunate role in this matter such as Mr. Ayele Gebru, Ato Theodros Haile Giorgis and Ato Shiferaw Abera, has now unlawfully decided as well as acted to dismiss Abune Yaekob’s leadership role in our church. This decision is made contrary to the laws that govern the church, which clearly indicates that our holy father, Abune Yaekob is the spiritual leader of the church and his leadership of our church can only be revoked by the decision that could come from our Holy Synod. As a result, firstly we demand that the Board immediately suspend the decision that it illegally made to dismiss our Holy Father Abune Yaekob’s relationship with the church and his spiritual children. Secondly, we demand that the Board summon an emergency meeting of all the members of the church. It is known that this Board has been refusing to call for a meeting of all members of the church for unknown reasons. Thirdly, we also demand that the Board stop denigrating the respect we all Ethiopians share for Our Holy Synod in exile in general and our Holy Father Abune Yaekob in particular.
With High Regards,
We the Concerned Members of Sealite Mihret Kidist Mariam Church in Atlanta.

  2. If you really are the member of the church then you should know who is the member of the DERG and ESAPACO who is elected as board member and doing this distractions at the time of we all Ethiopians should come together and support our people who are suffering from TPLF bruta killings and harassment for the last 25 years. You are one of those TPLF agents who are hiding in the name of religion and doing good favor to your bosses TPLF. We will not give you anymore chances to divide us at this critical time of the struggle.

  3. I have no problem with expressing different stands but blaming TPLF is really shame. I don’t like TPLF for divide and rule policy but blaming for your own weakness is an excuse. If you want to change, you start changing your self; no one can change you but yourself. It has become horrible and hate to each other rather than working toward benefiting each other. Before blaming TPLF stop having The Church under your circle. You are the problem when you are not controlling the financial accounts. You don’t see yourself you may be depressed. You need to visit therapists your Abba’s are already worse than you. I discussed with white and black people and I get sick when I am with you. No matter how you dress or how much money or education you have; you need healing with your emotions for better life and healthy thinking. Dreaming of blaming someone else is sickness when yourself are feeling painful memories. Spend time with your kid and a young kid then you will see yourself a unique way of recovering from blaming trauma. We have one Church and we shall have one Church others are coming and going. No one shall above one Church at any time. There was and is right and wrong and we shall improve them by working together not by blaming some one else.

    • I agree with you! Here we are blaming ourself for this, and that reaching to this shameful point finally. What i am asking is who is a bigger person in this fight to bring peace, sense, and stability of this church? We all are so rubbed in hate, ego, and preoccupied onself we don’t see what damge we create to our children mind. In the name of relegion you wage a war try to kill destroy each other It is a shame!!

  4. When you are weak and stupid-you blame weyane; when you did wrong and are inefficient-you blame weyane; when greed and power grasp you and destroy the unity-you blame weyane. How uncivilzed and moron way of thinking. That means weyanes are far better and clever-if they manipulate you. this is very dullness. stop it.

  5. First and foremost Glory be to the King of Kings and and the Lord of Lords.

I have no business putting my nose in the affairs of another church in a far away place for I live in Australia. However, being a follower of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo faith, having been active in the management of our church here, and having gone through a nasty inter and intra-church conflict, I am obliged to comment in the hope of bringing your congregation ask of themselves and others the following questions in order to resolve your difficulties.

    A) Are we following in the footsteps our Lord and Saviour? He commands us to love one another, forgive those who trespass against us, and even turn the other cheek when struck. Those in the position of leadership management committee, board members, clergy) must apply this foundation of our Christian belief.

    B) Everyone please read The Apostle Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians, Chapter 5 : 13-26 : “13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh[a]; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b] 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever[c] you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.”

    C) It is often the case that a can with less makes a noisier rattle than that which is full. This applies both in terms of an individual’s contribution (monetary, expertise, labour) to the church as well as in the individuals capacity to reason as well. Those with the least contribution and the least knowledge seem to make most of the trouble. It is important to identify and expose such rubble rouses.

    D) We must respect the Holy Synod in exile led by His Holiness Abune Mekarios. We must always seek their counsel and guidance on church matters. A degree in economics or electrical engineering or computer science is not enough to make the right decision on church matters.

    E) No one should aggrandize themselves or anyone individual or groups. This is the House of the Lord and let us be obedient to him and him alone. Please understand no one has more interest in the well being of our church nor has anyone got more wisdom and knowledge than then likes of His Grace Abune Melke Tsedek. Seek their counsel.

    E) If you follow our canon law and abide by the true Orthodox Tewahdo Ethos, no woyane or unwanted individual or group will have a stranglehold over your church nor create conflicts between you. Pray, ask for the intervention of our church elders and the Holy Synod, but above all ask for God’s intervention so that the Holy Spirit comes and cleanses your church. I will pray for you. Lots of brotherly love from Perth, Australia. Glory be to God. Amen.
