U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz: ‘I am secretly a citizen of Ethiopia’

August 23, 2013

(Photo: J. Scott Applewhite, AP)U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz poked fun at the flap over his citizenship at an appearance Thursday at National Instruments in Austin.

Cruz, who was born in Canada to a U.S.-born mother and a Cuban father, said this week he’ll renounce his Canadian citizenship because he thinks he should only be a U.S. citizen. On Thursday, he opened a TechNet gathering and then media was asked to leave so he could field questions freely from executives attending.

“I promise that while y’all are out I’ll try not to give any like really juicy piece of crazy news,” said Cruz. Then he added, “I am secretly a citizen of Ethiopa.”
