‘Several killed’ as Ethiopia police clash with protesters | BBC

(BBC) Several people are feared dead in clashes in north-western Ethiopia between police and anti-government protesters, amid a wave of unrest.

On Friday police arrested dozens of demonstrators during massive rallies in the capital, Addis Ababa.

The government has been facing protests from the two largest ethnic communities over alleged human rights abuses and other issues.

Authorities have banned demonstrations and blocked social media.

Despite the ban, people took to the streets in several parts of the country for a third consecutive day on Sunday, Emmanuel Igunza reports from Addis Ababa.

The worst violence took place in the north-western city of Bahir Dar in the Amhara region – the homeland of the Amhara people.

Police used tear gas and fired in the air to disperse thousands of people who had blocked roads and chanted anti-government slogans.

Unconfirmed reports say several people were killed. One resident told the BBC he had seen a friend being shot in the head by security forces.

Overnight protests continued in the Oromia region, which surrounds Addis Ababa, with police arresting dozens of people.

The unrest was sparked last November by a plan to expand the capital into Oromia. This led to fears farmers from the Oromo ethnic group, the largest in Ethiopia, would be displaced.

The plan was later dropped but protests continued, highlighting issues such as marginalisation and human rights.

Oromo activists say police have killed hundreds and arrested thousands of people from their community in recent months.

  1. TPLF / EPRDF never claimed to be perfect . Actually TPLF/EPRDF are working to make the generations after us become better than our generation. We all work for the betterment of the whole country not to destroy the country and distabilize the region which is on the verge of caos. If TPLF/EPRDF does not remain in power who is going to make sure all the development continues. Look at Iraq when USA left the country the country became a total failed state . Ethiopian government is not going to let this looters destroy the country. Many of our forefathers paid much and worked hard to develop the country to let these looters of Gondar and Oromo take over . We will fight till the end before we let some looters take these great country again. we will not go back 42 years back and be caught up in senseless looting and killing again. I had the privilege to talk to these so called protestors in person inside the country where the protests are going on only to find out for most that are protesting their main intention of all these Wolaqait , Addis Ababa expansion and so on question protest is to create lawlessness because they are all interested in looting, since they were noyt able to feed themselves like they were used to due to El-Nino.

  2. You don’t get tired of lies! You have lied so much, you can’t even tell the difference between lie and truth. If it is your will to die for a lie, it is your choice. The people will always win.

  3. Whoever wrote this rubbish has not intended to help any one, his side or the other side.
    It is better ignored.
    Justice for all.

  4. Debay Million,

I can see a point in your bla…bla… but I can not share it because you are not genuine. First of all you denayed the bold truth: TPLF is busy with destroying Ethiopia and looting its economies/resources. It has never had Ethiopian vision. It has covered itself with fake development oratories.

Like USA with Iraq, TPLF has effectively destroyed/disintegrated Ethiopia. If USA, had to stay in Iraq, it would have been a visible colonization. Same is true with TPLF because it is a traitor working for aliens and for the annul of Ethiopia.

Thus, the traitor TPLF has to be uprooted from Ethiopia like the invader USA from Iraq.

  5. In the dictionary of weyane development means robing the resource of amara, oromo, gambella and so on.The supporter of tplf should understand that no body didn’t go and want also go to the country of tigray. Whether u like it or not the people are struggling to stop ur merdering and robing.

  6. The chicken-head Tigraway is making his mindset readable boldly to the world. Do you think that you qualify at all to lead a great nation like Ethiopia with such mindset. You are known not to be a good family person when it comes to leadership. You are the looter, who in a broad daylight loot things ranging from cassettes (tapes) to plots of land, Part of a provinces. You are savage that you use 10th century tricks in the 21st century to fool around the world to no avail. TPLF is a mafia which serves only very few and has never represented the people of Tigray. Similar unrest are underway in Mekelle and I am wondering how you will explain that. Pack up and go and get ready to have your lawyers for the inevitable trial you will be faced with wherever you go.
Believe me your unceremonious funeral will soon be effected and on your tomb the great nation of Ethiopia will strengthen further its foundation.

  7. Who is looter?everyone will respond with same tune,it is the woyanes who robbed the country.Never in the history of governments has there been the ruling high officials directly involve inpaying customs duty and taxes in an organized manner.Litrally tplf officials do not have the moral authority to govern.
They are billioners, who steal government project money and yet declare as building the country from scratch. This cosmotic developmen, like the 35km railroad and the never ending GERD ,is a pretext to draw public attention(mere hope) and public resource(corruption).
The people from rural areas can tell the extent of corruption that has been done for the last 25 years and chunk of corruption is done by tplf officials who are immuned from being accountabl.
We know that no woyane official has been out of government role, while oromos and amharas in EPRDF were been in high turnover rate.

  8. Dictators never admit there fault until some body chase you out by guns. you should learn from Gaddafi from Libya leader or others . You need to open your eye and see who is the real looters you the minority TPLF leaders and your followers or the majority of Ethiopian who have nothing . Justice we be served soon . It is already started people are starting to stand up for there right. You better run or washed by the flood.
