Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Return of Dr. Riek Machar

The U.S. Embassy informs U.S. citizens in South Sudan that it has received reports that First Vice President-designate Dr. Riek Machar Teny is expected to return to Juba on Tuesday, April 26. U.S. Embassy staff have been instructed to minimize movements. The U.S. Embassy likewise advises all U.S. citizens, particularly those in Juba, to limit your movements. There may be checkpoints, road closures and other travel impediments around the city. The U.S. Embassy is not aware of any specific threats at this time.

Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities.

If demonstrations occur, remember that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
