Oromia Media Network executive Jawar Mohammed believes Ethiopia wants him dead

IBTimes UK interviews Jawar Mohammed as Ethiopia bans Oromia Media Network under state of emergency.

Aba Mela Explosive and Powerful Response to Jawar Mohammed

Jawar Mohammed, political analyst and executive director of the Oromia Media Network (OMN), believes the Ethiopian government would kill him, should he return to his homeland.

Mohammed,30, is an ethnic Oromo. He grew up in Dhummuga, a small town located in Oromia, Ethiopia’s largest state. During his childhood, Mohammed went to school in Asela and Adama and left his homeland in 2003 on a schoolarship to study in Singapore.

“I came here as a student, not as a refugee. But right now, I am probably the most wanted person by the Ethiopian government and I think the government is willing to kill me if they have a chance,” Mohammed, who is based in Minneapolis, alleged during a phone interview with IBTimes UK.

“Every time I appear on television, for the last few months, the government is all over the place condemning me and calling me a terrorist, an agitator and an enemy of the state.”

Oromo people ‘are making history’

In October, Ethiopia declared a six-month-long state of emergency following unrest in Oromia, and occasionally in Amhara.

The response to the protests, labelled as the biggest anti-government unrest Ethiopia has witnessed in recent history, has resulted in the death of more than 500 people since November 2015, a figure the government later confirmed.

In Oromia, people demonstrated against perceived disenfranchisement and lack of inclusion in the political process as the government is dominated by the Tigray minority. They also called for an end to land grabbing, claiming Oromo farmers are forcibly evicted from their farms.

Mohammed is a strong supporter of the protests as he believes Ethiopia “needs a regime change and the installation of a government elected by the people.”

“Oromo people are making history, they have been fighting for freedom, dignity and self-determination for almost 50 years now. In the last couple of years they struggled intensified, has become more strategic, coordinated and unified, it has weakened the government and has inspired other people in Ethiopia and the region,” he said.

Under the state of emergency, Ethiopia banned certain media outlets, including OMN.

“The government believes OMN and social media, Facebook particularly, are used to mobilise, agitate, coordinate people. The government sees this as a way to undermine their control over the population,” Mohammed claimed.

Mohammed believes it is too dangerous for him to go to Ethiopia right now. However, he said he is planning to return. “Going back is not an potion at the moment, but in the future, I will return and fight with my people.”

Government’s position

When contacted by IBTimes UK for comments on the allegations, a spokesperson for the Ethiopian embassy in London dismissed Mohammed’s claims as “unsubstantiated information”.

The diplomat also alleged Mohammed and other members of the diaspora community could have links to the Oromo Liberation Front, which the Ethiopian government labelled as a terrorist organisation that carried out violent acts in Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya.

Created in 1973,OLF stemmed from the discontent among people over a perceived marginalisation by the government and to fight the hegemony of the Amhara people.

OLF – still active today – calls for the self-determination of the Oromo people. The group has always denied allegations of violence , claiming its mission is to terminate “a century of oppression” against the Oromos.

  1. Too bad! Zehabesha.
The guy (Jawar) is a smart aleck. He is always looking for a limelight. He is a loser anyway.
Can’t you see that he is using your website to trick his way back to the Ethiopian Diaspora? Almost all Pro-Ethiopian websites shunned him knowing his official Anti-Unity stand.
Please do not give him an access to spread his iill will against the Ethiopian Unity.
    Ethiopia Prevails!

I support you. I am Oromo, but this gye called Jawwar- is the worst person to the integrity and unity of of our people and country as a nation. He is very clear and we must be careful not only to other Ethiopians but to the oromos as well.

He has a very hidden agenda/mission as we are aware.

He can trick everybody to a great extent. What self-determination- we millions of Oromos are against your self-determination bla bla. All we agree with him is the marginalisation of Oromos in the past, but all Ethiopians are oppressed in one way or another.

      Love Ethiopia

    • @Gideon,

Lier TPLF stooge, Jawar Momammed is loved by millions. He did his best to transform the dynamics of Ethiopian politics that has been dominated by minority Tigreans fascism. You already know the idea you promoted has been dead by the sacrifice of thausands Oromo people. We arlready undo the century long disinformation about Oromo politics. I doubt you will get any support, I suggest to wrap your hand with Oromo politics to free yourself and your people from minority fascism. I doubt you are opposition though!

  3. The Habesha, I appreciate your efforts to be accommodative and open minded. Nevertheless, focusing too much on unstable guys like Jowar who is self acclaimed experts is a grave mistake. People will doubt your seriousness as avenue for disseminating true & serious matters. Therefore, stop following this crap looser who talks one day something & next day another one. We have millions like that who are lost themselves, they don’t know which way to go. They are opportunistic to their very core. Stop being advocate of such self centred beasts.

  5. JAWAR BELIEVES THAT HE WILL BE KILLED BY THE ETHIOIAN GOV.. BUT I DONT THINK I WILL BE ATTENDING AT HIS FUNERAL CEROMONY BUT IF HIS WISH ACCOMPLISHED ..I WISH HIS SOUL TO REST IN PEACE SOMEWHERE IN THE SKY BUT ETHIOPIA WILL REMAIN INTACT HERE ON EARTH…….

  6. To the contrary TPLF wants him alive to use him to fragment the unified forces against Woyane by raising unworkable but divisive issues among the Oromo community and thereby giving a breathing time to oppressors.
He and his group are more akin to Woyane than to the unity forces and Ethiopians at large.
His inner motive under the fake guise of ‘Self determination’ is to ultimately negotiate with Woyane and secede Oromia ,irrespective of great majority of Oromos aspirations and needs and many sacrifices paid, to sit on a throne along with his disciples like Tsegaye Ararso ,Ezkiel Gabissa and so forth.
    Long live Ethiopia
    Hell to tojan horses

  7. I don’t know if this is a slip of tongue or a death wish, Jawar says ” . . . I think the government is willing to kill me if they have a chance.” Jawar can give them the chance and see if the government is “willing to kill” him. Much to his surprise, the government might say “NO”, not you.

Jawar is also gussing when he said “I am probably the most wanted person by the government”. What makes Jawar to think that? May be this one: “(the government) is calling me a terrorist, an agitator and an enemy of the state.” I’m not sure if he is called all that, but he can’t know for sure if the government is willing to kill him before he returns to the country. Tell him to try it.

Taking shelter in the U.S. and dissiminating poisonous propagnda to disturb harmony of people that have lived together for centuries is nothing short of cowardice. The couragious like Bekele Gerba are in the country.

The irony is “poisonous propagnda” Jawar dissiminates is being used by the government which Jawar says is “willing” to kill him. Why would the government be “willing” to kill someone that helps its cause? I don’t get it.

  8. The truth is always bitter for people to swallow. Jawahar Mohammed has millions of followers and he is the most pragmatic activist. You can not change him, he is who he is whether you like it or not. He practices what he preaches. He beleives in democracy, justice and human liberty. People dislike him because he speaks the fact.

  9. Oh, poor jawar stop playing with fire.didn’t your mother teach you the danger of poking your finger in the flame…

  10. Mureta,

    Shame on you.

You’re saying Jawar believes in democracy. That’s nonsense becuse tobe a nationalist and a democrat in the Ethiopian context are mutually exclusie.

If Jawar believes in democracy, he will work to democratize Ethiopia in which the Oromo will have their rightful place in democratic Ethiopia in equality with non-Oromos. But that’s not what he wants.

What Jawar wants is “independent” Oromia governed by Oromos. As we saw it in Eritrea, South Sudan and many others, “independence” does not mean freedom. By separating from Ethiopia, the Oromo get a sovereign homeland but not freedom. Oromos will have to fight for democracy for decades to snatch it from Oromo dictators who will grab power after separation. Jawar will be one of the power grabbers and he is definetly not a democrat. Others are much worse.

You also say he has sense of justice. I don’t think there is justice without law. And Jawar does not know law let alone respect them. On the other page he says he is the most wanted man by the Ethiopian government and it might be “willing” to kill him if given the chance. Well, he has every reason to presnet himself as a candidate for a killing. He rejects being Ethiopian, vows to destroy Ethiopia to create the state of Oromia and endorses armed violence. Given these facts, would the Ethiopian government be “unwilling” to help someone who begs for the final exit?

If Jawar is not a democrat, stands to disintegrate Ethiopia and dissimate its population and violates laws he can’t be a man who stands for liberty. He is a rabble rouser who speaks with the intention of inflaming the emotions of most Oromos and non-Oromo Ethiopians.

Trends show Ethiopians refuse to be inflamed by someone who is bogged down on excessive nationalism, has no time to read Ethiopian history and reflect on it.
