Haile Gebrselassie will not qualify for the Olympic marathon in London. “It is no longer realistic,” says his Dutch manager Jos Hermens to the German news agency DPA.
“Haile does not believe any more that he can win the qualifications at home. Three of his countrymen run already below 2.05. He will be 39 years old next month and is currently facing minor injuries. In the marathon these minor injuries will cause big problems,” Mr. Hermens said.
The two-time 10,000 meters Olympic champion lost his marathon world record to Patrick Makau of Kenya in September 2011 at the Berlin marathon.
Mr. Hermens denied that this mean a complete end to the athletics career of the Ethiopian long-distance runner.
