Tigi Salome Yosef
Tigi Salome Yosef is a believer, a mother, a part time Sunday school teacher, a banker, a licensed nutritionist, a cancer survivor, as well as the Goodwill Ambassador for BOOKS FOR AFRICA.
Having her own child changed everything for the better for Tigi. She is a devoted Christian and a member of the Ethiopian Christian Fellowship Church in Las Vegas. Her love for kids, especially for teens, got her involved in teaching Sunday school and young girls’ empowerment classes in her Ethiopian community.
Tigi has always been very decisive, determined and someone who loves challenges. Right out of high school she decided to work at a bank while attending the local college. Because she enjoyed working at the bank so much and had the determination God put inside her, in a short time she became the youngest banking center manager.
After being diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and going through 3 different surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy her life was changed. It made her realize that she could use that scary experience to make a positive impact in other young women’s lives, as well as raise awareness in her community. She joined forces with the Ethiopian community and Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation allowing her to share her experience, raise awareness, and to empower newly diagnosed young women who were in fear and didn’t know what to expect. She made it her personal mission to be a living example for every woman who goes through this dangerous disease by teaching them that there truly is a life after cancer, as well as being there for them throughout their breast cancer journey. Tigi has also been a guest speaker at women’s conferences in her town, at her church and other women’s gatherings to raise awareness about breast cancer.
After the cancer, she decided to eat healthy, be positive, exercise, and take good care of herself and those whom she loves most. With these goals in mind she went back to school and got her license in Nutrition & Personal Training. With that, she implemented a healthy lifestyle and became an asset to herself and others, including her beloved family.
As a young girl, her love for reading grew rapidly after reading over and over again Fiker Eske Mekaber (Love Until Death), one of the most popular books in Ethiopia. Her love for books connected her with her platform BOOKS FOR AFRICA, a simple name for an organization with a simple mission. Their goal is to end the book famine in Africa by collecting, sorting, shipping, and distributing books to students of all ages. BOOKS FOR AFRICA remains the largest shipper of donated text and library books to the African continent, shipping over 38 million books to 49 different countries since 1988. Tigi has been collecting books from book drives at her son’s school, churches, and donation boxes she placed at libraries to help the kids in Africa.
Her ultimate goal for the future is to bring awareness about breast cancer to the international level and to make books accessible to all children in Africa. She is continuing to work closely with Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation by openly sharing her survivor story on social media to help save lives. Tigi has made a personal commitment to continue educating the kids in her beloved Africa. In May 2017 Tigi Salome Yosef was named the Goodwill Ambassador for BOOKS FOR AFRICA.
