Let’s make it 20, says Manchester United’s £16m new boy Ashley Young

(Manevnews)New United signing Ashley Young is already targeting the club’s 20th league title after agreeing a five-year deal at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson continued his record-breaking summer of spending with the £16m signing of Young – but will not stop there in his bid to topple Barcelona.

He has already landed Blackburn defender Phil Jones for £16.5m, with Spain Under-21 goalkeeper David de Gea set to complete an £18.3m move.

Young, 25, (right) said: “The opportunity to come and play for one of the biggest clubs in the world is one I couldn’t turn down.

“It’s a chance to hopefully become part of the history by helping to win the 20th title. It’s a prospect I always looked at from being a child – to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“I’ve got that opportunity now so I’ve just got to take it with two hands.” Ferguson still hopes to secure a replacement for the retired Paul Scholes, with Dutch World Cup hero Wesley Sneijder top of his wanted list.

But Ferguson’s obsession goes beyond Premier League dominance, which is why he is planning an overhaul of his squad this summer.

The 69-year-old has been handed the biggest transfer war-chest of his 25 years at the club with more than £100m to spend on creating his last great side.

Ferguson outlined his determination to meet the challenge set by Champions League winners Barcelona after United’s 3-1 defeat to Pep Guardiola’s brilliant side in last month’s Wembley final.

He tried and failed to sign Young during the January transfer window but was always confident a deal could be completed at the end of the season.

Rio Ferdinand was one of the first to celebrate his England team-mate’s arrival, describing him as “another top, hungry and young player.”

Michael Owen, whose first team opportunities could be further limited by Young, said: “Great to hear the Ashley Young deal has been finalised. Great addition to the squad.”

Young revealed it was the lure of working with Ferguson that convinced him to join United.

“It is a great feeling when one of the best, probably the greatest manager in the world, wants to sign you and one of the best clubs in the world want to buy you,” he said. “As soon as I got the phone call I wanted to get the papers signed.

“They are a fantastic team, they always produce great players and are fighting for titles. They’ve got that winning mentality.

“For myself as a player I always wanted to be the best I can be and have that challenge.

“A club like this allows me to have that challenge of winning titles and, hopefully, I can be part of it this season.”
