One of Minnesota’s U.S. Representatives is the subject of a death threat from the Islamic State, and he hit back against the terrorist organization on Wednesday.
Fifth District Rep. Keith Ellison (DFL), the first Muslim elected to Congress, is among the prominent western Muslims named on a hit list in the terror group’s magazine “Dabiq,” the New York Post reports.
Others named include top Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin and British politicians Sayeeda Warsi and Sajid Javid, with the terrorists referring to them as “overt crusaders” and “politically active apostates.”
But Ellison gave a withering response to the threats on Wednesday, with CityPages reporting he refuses to call the group ISIS, instead referring to their alternative name of “Daesh,” a term the website says “translates roughly to ‘bigot barbarians’.”
Here’s his statement:
“As millions of faithful Muslims flee Daesh’s imposed nightmare they call a ‘caliphate’, Daesh takes the time to threaten Muslim public servants in the West, like myself and my friend Huma Abedin. Daesh is a collection of liars, murderers, torturers, and rapists. No Muslim I know recognizes what they preach as Al-Islam. The fact that I’m on Daesh’s bad side means I am fighting for things like justice, tolerance, and a more inclusive world.”
According to the Pioneer Press, ISIS/Daesh leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi said the people named in the magazine should receive “a painful – and fatal – punishment.”
The newspaper notes that Ellison’s office has been in touch with the Capitol police, which will investigate along with the national Joint Terrorism Task Force.
