Ethiopia’s Dawit Seyoum sets new 5km World Record

Dawit Seyaum of Ethiopia set a new women’s road 5km record in a mixed gender race with 14:41 on Saturday, November 6 at the Urban Trail in Lille, France.

The 25-year-old Seyaum, who specializes in the 1500m shaved two seconds from Beatrice Chepkoech’s world record of 14:43.

World leader in the women’s steeplechase Norah Jeruto of Kenya took seconds in 14:43 with African 5000m bronze medallist Meskerem Mamo in third in 14:55.

Senbere Teferi is the women-only world 5km record with 14:29 from two weeks ago in Herzogenaurach.

In the men’s 5km race, Berihu Aregawi of Ethiopia, who won this year Diamond League’s 5000m, almost broke Joshua Cheptegei’s world record, by winning the race with a stunning time of 12:52.

Aregawi won the race by more than 30 seconds as Hosea Kiplangat of Uganda was second in 13:25, four seconds ahead of Ethiopia’s Yasin Haji.
