Ethiopia’s 800 Meters Hero Wins Samsung Diamond League

Ethiopia’s 800 meters here, Mohammed Aman,successfully defended his 2012 crown last night at the final Samsung Diamond League competition of the 2013 season in Bruxelles.

His victory is a testament to his discipline, hunger, and dedication to exceed and succeed. Although he entered the race already having clinched the 2013 Diamond Race (800m) by a significant margin;  he set a new Ethiopian National Record,  the 2013 World Leading time, and became the 9th fastest runner of all-time (1:42.37). The Agence France – Presse effectively summed up the race with the following words:

“…Arguably the performance of the night, however came from Ethiopian Mohammed Aman, who lit up the 800m…”

In only his second professional season, Mohammed Aman has accomplished what many athletes hope to accomplish in a full career: back-to-back Samsung Diamond League Champion (800m), IAAF World Indoor Champion (800m), IAAF World Outdoor Champion (800m).

Mohammed Aman has ended the 2013 season with many, in Ethiopia and around the world, eagerly anticipating what he will accomplish next season. With youth (19 years old) on his side, his ambitions to step up to the 1500m next season, and his long-term goals set on an Olympic gold medal and the 800m World Record: it is no surprise many regard him as the bearer of the hopes of a nation where athletics is more than just a sport, but a way of life.
