Tens of thousands of Ethiopians have attended the funeral of one of the country’s most popular comedians and television hosts.
Alebachew Teka, whose career took off for his satirical TV show under the repressive regime of Mengistu Haile Mariam, died on Sunday in a car crash.
More recently his fame centred on The Alebe Show in which he persuaded rich guests to help the destitute.
Mr Alebachew, 43, died when his car plunged into a ravine, police say.
A cameraman also died in the accident and another was badly injured.
“He was loved by so many because of his generosity,” said Tefara Gedamu, another well-known TV personality.
“He was famous throughout Ethiopia.”
