Ethiopia: Cry! Cry Freedom the Beloved Country! – By Prof. Alemayehu G. mariam

7 mins read

I cry for the hundreds of victims of the October 2, 2016 Irreecha Festival Massacres in Ethiopia.

I also cry out for freedom, democracy and human rights in Ethiopia.

On October 2, 2016,  troops loyal to the Tigrean Peoples’ Liberation Front (T-TPLF) opened fire indiscriminately on crowds attending one of the most important cultural and spiritual events in Ethiopia, the Irreecha (Thanksgiving) Festival  in the town of Bishoftu, some 45 miles southeast of the capital Addis Ababa.

An estimated 500 plus people were killed by gunfire and in a pandemonium that followed the gunfire. Twice that number were severely injured and maimed.

For over ten years, I have been the unremitting voice of massacre victims in Ethiopia.

For over ten years, I have appealed to the conscience of T-TPLF leaders, but having none, they have ignored my appeals.

The people of Ethiopia petitioned, solicited and implored T-TPLF leaders and their cronies and supporters to change their ways; to become more human and humane;  to show a little compassion and understanding;  to be a little less greedy and to feel the pain and suffering of their. They have turned a deaf ear to the voice of justice and blinded their eyes to  the suffering of the people. The have answered the peoples’ pleas with repeated insults, injuries and massacres.

I became a human rights advocate outraged by the Meles Massacres which resulted in the deaths and injuries of over one thousand unarmed protesters following the 2005 election.

As a utopian Ethiopian, I believed that  “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” For over a decade, every Monday, without missing a single week, I have raised my pen to register my bootless cries to the conscience of humanity and the mercy of divinity.

I believe freedom is like a train that is always delayed, but also always arrives.

On October 15, 2007 (almost to the week this month), I announced to Ethiopians, “Hold on! Hold fast! Hold tight! Your Freedom Train is coming!” (See my commentary, “One Small Step for the U.S. Congress, One Giant Leap for Ethiopian Human Rights”.)

I believe the Ethiopia’s Freedom Train has finally arrived, though very, very late.

All aboard!!!!!

Oromos, Amharas, Tigreans, Gurages, Sidamans, Welayita, Hadiya, Afar, Gamo, Ogadeni, Anuak… Christians, Muslims…

All aboard!!!!!

I have made my preliminary case for a crimes against humanity investigation and prosecution in the Irreecha Festival Massacres last week. (See my commentary, T-TPLF’s Killing Fields in Ethiopia: Massacre by Stampede at the Irreecha Festival!)

Let Barack Obama Speak!

For the first time, in over a decade, I must hold my peace this week.

This is the time for me to cry and cry again for the innocent young men, women and children who were slaughtered by the T-TPLF at the Irreecha Festival in Bishoftu on October 2, 2016.

I raised my pen to write, but my pen refused to shed its tears of ink. So I must cry and cry again.

I shall bite my tongue, just this once.

I yield my pages to Barack Obama to speak directly to the Irreecha Festival Massacre  victims, their families, friends and communities in  Ethiopia.

obama-628x420Let Barack Obama, the stalwart defender of the T-TPLF speak to them about democracy, the rule of law and human rights.

The blood of the Irreecha Massacre Victims are on Obama’s hands. There is no detergent on earth that can wash the blood of those victims from his hands. NONE!

Let Obama wag his silver forked tongue and ooze out his venomous lies.

I have nothing to say to him now.

But paraphrasing Shakespeare, I ask my readers only one question: “Were there a more malignant serpent seen, with forked tongue,/ That slily glided towards the majesty of Ethiopia?”

Thus spoke Barack Obama:

I don’t bite my tongue too much when it comes to these issues. We are opposed to any group that is promoting the violent overthrow of a government, including the government of Ethiopia, that has been democratically elected. We are very mindful of Ethiopia’s history – the hardships that this country has gone through. It has been relatively recently in which the constitution that was formed and the elections put forward a democratically elected government. U.S. President Barack Obama, Press conference in Addis Ababa 27 July 2015 (Emphasis added.)

Let history record: Ethiopians make no distinction between the killers who committed heinous crimes against humanity at the Irreecha Festival on October 2, 2016 and those who defend, bankroll, finance, subsidize, publicize, authorize, humanize, glamorize, militarize, idolize, lionize an apologize for them.

It is often said, “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

The history of apartheid South Africa is repeating itself in Ethiopia every day.

On March 21, 1960, the white minority apartheid regime massacred 69 unarmed Black men and women and wounded 180 others protesting “pass laws” in Sharpeville, South Africa.

On October 2, 2016, the T-TPLF apartheid regime in Ethiopia massacred over 500 men, women and children and injured hundreds more.

The Sharpeville Massacre is permanently recorded in the annals of man’s inhumanity to man in the Twentieth Century.

I do not doubt that the T-TPLF Irreecha Festival Massacre of October 2016 will be remembered as the second Sharpeville Massacre on the African continent in the in the Twenty-first century.

BEHOLD THE HARVEST OF APARTHEID IN WHITE AND BLACK!

  1. Prof Al HM,

While I am one of your admirers in your steadfast stand to fight the TPLF with your mighty pen, I am disappointed at the stark bias in addressing the current massacre of our people in Ethiopia. It is only the Oromo people in Bishoftu but so many others in the Amhara region– Gondar and Gojam. It is pitty that at this critical time, some of us find it difficult to see beyond our own ethnic circles.

    • Dear ALL
Please circulate this. We investigated that
Mr Abraha Belai- Ethiomedia blogger and editor- is an Eritrean who is intentionally posting elements to inciting hatred and war between our ethnic groups. He is now posting to wage war between Tigri and Oromo Ethnic groups. This person- is the first editor who posted the denial of Egyptian government on the current turmoil in Ethiopia. No other bloggers posted about that. Now he is posting a news (not true) that says- An Oromo soldier killed a Tigre Commander in the East. No other bloggers posted that because they are Ethiopians.

Abraha is earning a huge amount of funds from Shabia and Egyptians to deliberately and he has been given an assignment to very strategically post a news/comments to divide our people among Ethnic lines and incite hatred among ourselves. Please this is very true and refrain from using his blog and do not read his articles. Most of the time he is the one who is posting the comments because now many Ethiopians including me are aware of his devilish deeds.

      • Who are to tell us what to read and what not? Eritrean or not Eritrean is not what matters most, it’s the contents of his writing. Are they true? That’s. What matters, boo!

  3. I can not understand this type of cruelty and mischief so secretive they tried to hide their evil did from the world. A massacre can not be hidden in the face of the earth. The innocent victim’s blood and cry will ring upon freedom! Talk about barbarism, state sponsored terrorism, and outright utter madness. I know that TPLF is determined to have hate for Ethiopian people that started during the gorilla war era. This narrow nationalism ideology has a deep rooted hate against Ethiopian people. This government’s philosophy is disabling the Tigrian people to doubt from joining the oppressed people of Ethiopia. This moment should be a game changer for anyone who think rationally and open mind. The whole country is crying for freedom! equality! and justice for all!! These tribes, groups, party, ethnics, relatives, villages, and communities have shown the pain of one is the pain of all. The wisdom of suffering, bleeding, and dying gave the strength to Ethiopian people a resolve towards justice for all, that the suffering one is the suffering of all.

  4. Do not listen to this so called prof Alemayehu- A divorce. How can person how couldn’t handle a family try to comment on Ethiopian affair. He is like Berhanu Nega is a rude academic as rated by his students. He is very arrogant and an outdated person with outdated personality. It is disappointing to allow him to make such dis tasteful and racist comments. All he has been doing has no substance at all rather inciting Ethiopians to wage war on themselves. Why do not leave poor Ethiopians (us) alone? or bring a meaningful/ workable strategies to fight and end the dictatorship? Alemayhu is nothing other than an empty and arrogant box

    • BER.
Challenge the professor’s idea if you have the competence to do so. It seems like you are defending a naked murderous regime simply because you came from the same ethnicity as the TPLF dictators.

  5. Alemayehu
You made your preliminary investigation on….
Don’t you know that, You are reported to the ICC/CIA?EU. We got certified copies from all these to confirm the reception of our court appeal against you and the others. You are one of those who have been posting comments and articles that have elements of inciting ethnic and genocidal crimes. One day, sooner or later, you will appear before ICC.
    YOu will see.

  7. Excellent. yes, The train has arrived. I hope that train selectively loads pure Tigrean from the T-TPLF Tigreans. I hope the people onboard this train figureout the best way to live together. It is one one thing to smoke out the evil but difficult to design for the future. History shows us more evil emerge oput of evil (evil Emperor> more evil derg> superme evil Woyane> ???). I hope this cycle stops. May I ask God to give us the correct social software for Ethiopia.

  8. Alemayehu!!! Ethiopia will never cry!!! This slogan was the Nelson Mandela slogan during his imprisonment. Alemayehu G/Mariam!!! We know each other!!! As you think, the country’s unity and it’s democracy and developments will never be stopped!! Cry!! For yourself!!!

  9. Dear Prof. Alemayehu G. mariam,

It is a great article; I loved it. The images you used to compare what happened in South Africa during Apartheid with what is going on in Ethiopia made it easier for me to understand what is going on in Ethiopia. I wished I came up with the idea of using the images during Apartheid and wrote an article about it.

Your contribution to the struggle against the TPLF is outstanding. Keep it brother!!!

    I am proud of!!!
