Aid agencies and the government said they must raise more than $1.4bn of aid, but that only about half of that amount has been collected.
The emergency appeal is the third largest in the world after those for Syria and Yemen.
Ethiopia “should not be neglected by any means despite all the other crises that are going on elsewhere in the world,” Prime Minister Hailemariam Deselegn told the Associated Press news agency in an interview.
Ethiopia drought puts 400,000 children’s lives at risk
The US has been the biggest donor, giving more than $532m in humanitarian aid to the country since October 2014.
The Ethiopian government has also spent about $380m of its own money.
“My country deserves more support because we are also sheltering some 750,000 refugees from neighbouring countries that need food aid,” Hailemariam said, referring to the fact that the Horn of Africa nation hosts a large number of mainly South Sudanese, Eritrean and Somali refugees.
“If something goes wrong, it is the international community who has not come in. The aid provided to us so far is very little and it often came very late. I urge organisations like UNICEF to come in if they think this is a worst case scenario. Just talking is not a solution.”

The drought was brought on a result of the the El Nino climate phenomenon that affected seasonal rains, causing crops to fail and livestock to die.
Ethiopia was devastated by a drought in the 1980s that – exacerbated by a civil war – killed hundreds of thousands of people and brought the country global attention.

  1. Repeat!!!! 2nd Call!!
We should all second this call for help. This very dry weather phenomenon is so extreme that the entire eastern half of Africa and all the way to southern Turkey has been bone dry for months. Some vast areas in countries like our old country down to South Africa is affected. Some of the countries are more developed with higher GDP(PPP) that make them capable of coping with the drought with minor damage to people and livestock. But in countries like our old homeland is a different story where more than 90% of the population depends on rain for survival. Such dry weather phenomenon that comes and goes at a decade or more intervals has been a national nightmare that will not leave us alone. It is going to happen again and again just as it happened so many times in our history. It is not something to be ignored or used as a political fair game. Those of you who are old enough to remember what happened in 1984-85, should have a vivid memory how politics played a part for the demise of more than a million people from starvation. Don’t start with me about the demonic Mengistu on that one. And don’t remind me with then rebel fighters who intervened or making efforts of humanitarian organizations who rushed there to help the starving very difficult. Mengistu was telling them ‘through me or nothing’. The rebels were also telling them the same. During such disgusting wrangling, help become too late to many and millions perished. Nobody should be proud of that. Nobody!!! Years later when I read an article (we can call it a confession) how one of the members of a rebel group told us what happened. How sold sacks of millet half filled with dirt to the humanitarian organization for a huge sum of money. Such claim made my blood boil in rage. He revealed such evil act because he had an ax to grind with the late PM. My countrymen! My dear countrymen!!! How one of us did such a demonic act against our giving, generous people we all left behind? How? I am struggling to hold back my tears now. It does not matter which ethnic group. If you go into their village and ask them for something to eat or water to quench your thrust, they will give you what ever they have. Their generosity is legendary. Now everything they own is gone. The ground below their feet is bone, sun baked dry. They have not seen a streak of cloud for quite some time now. They are walking around in the agony of hunger and they may suddenly drop dead in their tens of thousands and possibly in their millions soon. Very soon!!! We, their products, are fortunate enough to live is societies of plenty and The Almighty will never forgive us if we forget them. We should forget about politics and do everything we can to help them. We should donate everything we can and more to come to their rescue. They are calling for us to help them. Let’s send donations to any humanitarian organization now for such sacred endeavor. Our Creator Shall Bless us if we do just that. Do not forget that whenever we put food in our mouths millions are suffering agonizing pain from incessant hunger. It won’t be too long before we see children with ribs sticking out from seriously malnourished bodies during the nightly news broadcast. Hunger knows no politics. Politics is rather injected into it by hideous individuals and demonic (bigoted) groups. Please let’s help them!!! Let’s just do this!!!!
