Angola beat Ethiopia 2-1 in Group B game to record their first points of the African Nations Championship as both sides bowed out.
Goals by Papel and Manuel Alfonso gave Angola a 2-0 lead and they saw off a threatened comeback from Ethiopia, who pulled a goal back through Tesfaye, to end their tournament on a high note.
Meanwhile, Cameroon beat DR Congo 3-1 to reach the quarter-finals.
The Indomitable Lions advance to the last eight as Group B winners, with DR Congo going through as runners-up.
Yazid Atouba made it 1-0 to Cameroon just before half-time but Jean Makusu equalised straight after the break.
Nicolas Moumi restored Cameroon’s lead on 50 minutes and Samuel Nlend sealed the victory with a chipped finish 13 minutes later.
Cameroon will play Ivory Coast in the next round and DR Congo face hosts Rwanda. Both games will be played on Saturday.

  1. I grew up playing soccer (football) and I still play it. What I am seeing from the Ethiopian national team pretty much indicates a team with no ambition and skill to outclass its opponents. Take for example the recent game with the Congolese. All of the goals were scored at a close range leaving the goalkeeper without a choice. The defense is worthless. When the offense gets the ball the individual trickery without a worthy skill leaves their flank open to a quick attack. Some of the players hold the ball for so long (dwell time on the ball) any minute chance to advance the ball to the opposite side is lost as quickly as it developed.
Of course there are those who criticize the coach of the national team. I am not with that group. The Ethiopian National team coach has got the credential and the love for the game to go with it. However, his shortcoming might be in the selection of the national team members for each match. He will need to reassess his team selection criteria. A team player is one who releases the ball in a timely manner to his teammate without seeking an individual glory. My observation with the Angola game proves the Ethiopian national team is unfocused, weak and lacks the discipline and the tactical gear to be a worthy opponent. I would hope we will see them in better stance in the upcoming games be it at home or an away game.
