Arsenal 4-1 Liverpool: Hector Bellerin, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez strike in first half blitz before Olivier Giroud’s clincher to leave Brendan Rodgers’ top four hopes in tatters

  • Arsenal and Liverpool met at the Emirates Stadium in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off in the Barclays Premier League
  • Raheem Sterling started for Liverpool after revealing this week that he had rejected a new £100,000-a-week deal 
  • After a series of missed chances Hector Bellerin gave Arsenal the lead in the 37th minute with left-foot strike
  • Just three minutes later, Mesut Ozil doubled the lead with a free-kick that flew in at the goalkeeper’s near post
  • Alexis Sanchez made it 3-0 before half-time with a powerful strike from the edge of the box past Simon Mignolet
  • Laurent Koscielny was replaced by Gabriel Paulista shortly after half-time after picking up an injury
  • Aaron Ramsey was also withdrawn by Arsene Wenger after he took a knock during the second half
  • Sterling was brought down by Bellerin in the second half for a penalty, which was converted by Jordan Henderson
  • Emre Can was shown the red card after a second yellow card with five minutes to go to end Liverpool’s hopes
  • Olivier Giroud scored for the sixth Premier League game in a row in stoppage time to make it 4-1 to the home side
