Ethiopia’s prime minister arrived in Eritrea on an official visit on Saturday.

Abiy Ahmed was welcomed in the capital Asmara by Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki and other senior officials.

The two leaders will confer on bilateral and regional issues, according to a statement by the Ethiopian premier’s office.

Relations between the neighboring countries were restored in June 2018 after two decades of mistrust and tensions.

They fought a bloody war from 1998 to 2000 that claimed around 70,000 lives.

Abiy won the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for leading efforts to normalize Ethiopia and Eritrea’s ties and for making regional peace a priority.

  1. Outstanding! thanks President Isayas Afwerki and prime minister Abiy Ahmed, what’s past is past and therefore it’s history, however the war between the two families would not have happened, painful lessons learnt, I am ecstatic that we are back together and nothing, I mean absolutely nothing should separate us ever again, may GOD bless Ethiopia and Eritrea and their population.

  2. Never trust that crackpot, Isaiyas. He is no friend of Ethiopia. A warning to Abiy: no deals with Isayas. Isayas is most likely meddling in on Ethiopian affairs (GERD) on behalf of his old paymasters the Egyptians. Ethiopians will never accept any deals with Egypt the eternal enemy of Ethiopia. No treaty on GERD. If water sharing compromises has to be made it has to involve all Nile basin countries not just Egypt and Sudan.
