Goals of EHSNA

As EHSNA is underway for its third annual event, it still stands for the same goal. EHSNA’s primary mission and vision is to promote and preserve the rich heritage and traditions of Ethiopian culture. The Society, a 501(c)(3) organization, has a vision and mission to promote and preserve the rich heritage and traditions of the Ethiopian culture and its progenitors. Through its efforts it hopes to establish a strong link between that heritage and the new generation of Ethiopians born and raised in the Diaspora. The Society also wants to share that historical and cultural heritage with the other citizens of North America and contribute even more to the wide diversity that the North American nations already celebrate.

Last Year EHSNA Activities

EHSNA presented its historic and successful second Annual Festival, themed as “Your Roots Produce Your Fruits,” with a three day long entertaining event from 27-29 of July, 2012 at Georgetown University Harbin Field Facility in Washington, D.C. The festival portrayed thousands of Ethiopians, American-Ethiopians and friends of Ethiopia. The program showcased the historical, cultural, artistic, athletic, and culinary treasures, creativity, and talent from the Ethiopian community for the enjoyment and education of the public at large. EHSNA has proven itself as a great Ethiopian cultural institution that upholds Ethiopia’s over 3000 years old heritage. The Society will seek to hold similar festivals annually during the summer of this year.

EHSNA organized a special event to honor the 116th anniversary of the Adwa victory celebration in Washington, DC on March 3rd 2012. The battle of Adwa was a momentous turning point in Ethiopian history as well as history of modern Africa.  EHSNA wants to recognize this significant patriotic holiday and will continue to celebrate every year.

This Year EHSNA Activities

The Ethiopian Heritage Society is in the preliminary stages of organizing an event to be held on Saturday March 2nd to commemorate the Battle of Adwa and its influence on the concepts of racial and gender equality. Historians and scholars have been invited to speak about the battle and its significance as a turning point in the histories and heritages of Ethiopia, Africa, Europe and America.

The society is also in the process of planning its third annual Ethiopian Heritage Festival in Washington, D.C. to be held on summer. The festival was a great success the last two years and once again it will feature the music, arts and crafts, food and fun engendered by Ethiopian culture. Venues for both events will be announced in the near future.

EHSNA Agenda

Aside from the annual festival, the Society will work towards its mission by the sponsorship of lecture series, stage productions, art exhibits, sporting events, and the recognition of past and new achievements of individuals and groups within the Ethiopian community, including those in the Diaspora and in the nation of Ethiopia itself, as well.

Ethiopian Communities Reach Out

Members of the Ethiopian Diaspora enjoy the peace and prosperity that comes with living in the various North America communities, but they also cherish the remembrance of their lives in Ethiopia, of the families and friends still there, and the way of life still extant in the Horn of Africa. The activities of the various Ethiopian communities and their organizations are meant to be a source of strength to all of Ethiopian heritage and an outreach of friendship to their adopted fellow citizens.
