Oromia State Govt Warns ‘Extremist Forces Operating in the Name of Amhara

The Oromia Regional State government issued a statement late this evening warning an unnamed group that it referred to “extremist forces operating in the name of Amhara” who are “the main enemies of the Amhara and Ethiopian nations and nationalities.”

The statement said these forces “have infiltrated into the Oromia region and committed disgusting acts”; which have “gravely angered” the people of the region, and warned that the Oromia state government “strongly believes that it is not appropriate to remain silent” when “this extremist force” disseminated its “disgusting acts” using various media outlets, including the regional government media, and “preaching hatred and violence.”

The regional state government said multi-national unity and brotherhood were the foundation of a strong Ethiopian unity. And that standing together for the common good, strengthening our common values rather than differences was a lasting solution. Extremism has no nationality or religious representation,” it said, added that it does not benefit anyone at all. “As long as there is anti-people sentiment, we must fight it together” it said, and alluded to the importance of process of creating consensus on the issues of disagreement as a means to “dry up the source of our problems and strengthening the constitution.” The Oromia National Regional State strongly supports ongoing efforts of the national dialogue to end this cycle of conflict once for all,” it said.

However, it blamed that “instead of recognizing that extremism is anti-people, no matter where it comes from, and fighting it together, pointing fingers has become dominantly visible.”

Sacrifice to be paid at this stage is “to save the country and the people, not to give the opportunity to extremist forces operating in the name of the Amhara.” The statement further went on accusing these “extremist forces” of “causing untold national damage and eroding our values”

It also said that the ultimate goal of these extremists was to “fulfill TPLF’s conspiracy” to create enmity between the Oromo and Amhara peoples. “If the evil deeds of these extremists are not stopped at one place, it will create another dangerous situation in our country,” it warned.

Accusation and counter-accusations is mounting among various non-state actors and zonal officials in Oromia and Amhara states after clashes on 29 March between armed groups from the Minjar Shenkora woreda of North Shewa zone, Amhara regional state, and local militia in the bordering Fentalle woreda, East Shewa zone of Oromia regional state, resulted in the death of at least 26 local militias and members of Oromia police, including the militia commander, Abdisa Ifa, on 29 March

  1. Amharas are fed up with Oromia government because it has not done naything to protect them whille they are killed in mass to a degree aproaching ethnic cleansing for the last ten years. Self protection is the only alternative when government fails to protect. Condemning people that came together to protect themselves because the government failed to protect is meaningless. If Oromia government which is the same as the federal government insists on dismantling Amhara self defense, Amharas will have no choice bust to distance themselves from the federal government. The constitution allows self determination up to secession and they should invoke it so that they become independent state from Oromo rule. Joining Eritrea including Tigray in one confederation is the future. Electricity export (because Tana is Amhara) will be Amhara’s main revenue to launch the new confederation. Direct investment from the US and Europe, Russia and China to Amahra region without Oromo control will emable the region to proper. Let Oromos rule South, East and West of the Empire they are building. Good Luck.

  2. If Amhara agree confederation there will be lasting peace in the Horn of africa.
It is a good sign for hope and peacful developement.
Ahmara Ă©lite were the only nation opposing multinational federation where each nation has the wright of self determination. Now they realise the Last chance to build new ethiopia is confederal system. Belgium is good exemple. English be official language

  3. Sa!

Amharas have no choice other than confederation simply because federation does not work. Why?

As a multi-ethnic country, Ethiopia will not have a fair and free election without the domination of one or another ethnic group. The way Oromo rose to power and now control the entire country through proxy regional governments is the proof. Tigreans did it for the last thirty years and Oromos have stepped in their shoes to impose similar one ethnic group rule. With their number and size of their region, Oromo rule will be much worse than Tigrean`s. Give another ten years to Oromo rule, Ethiopia will be the tail of the world by all standards of measure.

So, it is time for Amharas to exercise self-determnation and vote on confederation. This will give them the opportunity to attract direct foreign nvestment since confederation will enable them to have economic diplomats and even have embasies abroad cutting the Oromo controlled foreign ministry diverting foreign investment to Oromia. They can also have a defense force which will protect them from foreign invaders including ethnic Oromo organizations. As Sa said above, the Belgian model is something to explore.

In any event, Ethiopia needs vast decentralization resembling confederation since the federalism the country has is unitarism in disguise. Controlled from the centre, it cannot develop let alone prosper.

Tigreans have floated the idea of confederation, Amharas must follow. Tigreans know that they will not be fairly treated under Oromo rule; their choice of confederation is just. Amharas must seize the opportunity to decide their destiny via self-determination without wasting another decade under incopetent Oromo rule. Despite all the atrocities they have committed, Tigreans are being heard and embraced by the Oromo rule since Oromos now feel savour of Ethiopia. Falks! Don’`t be fooled!. Oromos pretend to be “savors” only if they rule the entire country as one piece. Like any other ethnic group, they are after resources. If Amharas want to be heard and embraced as Tigreans, they have to go for confederation. If confederation does not work, they have to say good bye to Ethiopia.

It is outdated for Amharas to handg on outdated “mama ethiopia” cry since nobody in the country is interested in it. any more Amhara! Wake up and smell the coffee. Tell Oromos that you want confederation – if not confederation then separation and see Oromo crack down will soften even disappear as it did for Tigreans. But real confederation is the only wayout from the decades long quagmire. Oromo softeneing does not take anywhere.

Try it! It will work and catapult Amhara development and growth to the sky. It will eventually liberate Oromos too from their bloody distructive path poised to takir everybody else down with them.
