The EU-sponsored resolution to renew the mandate of the International Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia (ICHREE) is an example of humanitarian imperialism, which refers to the weaponization of human rights to advance political goals, the American Political Analyst Korybko said.
It is to be recalled that the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a draft resolution extending the mandate of the International Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia last week.
The Embassy of Ethiopia in Brussels rejected the resolution adopted by the European Parliament.
African and other members of the Human Right Council also rejected the politicization of the human rights situation in Ethiopia and expressed their solidarity with Ethiopia.
Through their vote, they opposed intervention, destabilization, and encroachment on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ethiopia.
The American Political Analyst Andrew Korybko said this is an “example of humanitarian imperialism, which refers to the weaponization of human rights to advance political goals.”
It heavily relies on propaganda and is aimed at delegitimizing its target in order to increase public support for more aggressive action against it.
In this context, “the Golden Billion is practicing humanitarian imperialism against Ethiopia to justify more sanctions against it or worse,” he noted.
Asked about the meaning of the term Golden Billion, Korybko answered that the term refers to the world’s richest one billion people concentrated in the West, which also includes Australia, Japan, and Singapore, that are Asian countries allied with the US.
The poorer rest of humanity comprises the Global South, which is presently led by BRICS and the SCO, though ASEAN, the AU, and CELAC are emerging as leaders too, he elaborated.
“These two are competing over the future of the global systemic transition, which the Golden Billion wants to evolve in a direction that retains their disproportionate influence over international relations and thus largely preserves the fading unipolar system. The Global South, meanwhile, envisages a more democratic, equal, and just world order that’s truly multipolar.”
The political analyst stressed that opposing humanitarian imperialism at the UN is important, but this must also be followed by raising maximum awareness across the world of this new form of pressure by the Golden Billion.
Public service campaigns should be commenced by leading multipolar media outlets from influential BRICS and SCO countries to inform the global audience about this Hybrid War threat, Korybko stressed.
According to him, “the failure to do so effectively, let alone at all, inevitably leads to the Golden Billion spinning that opposition as supposedly being driven by so-called ‘autocracies/dictatorships against democracies’”.
The reality is that it’s autocratic and dictatorial for the Golden Billion to seek to impose their subjective understanding of human rights onto anyone else, not to mention through propaganda and other means, he noted.
The Global South’s stance towards human rights, by contrast, is truly democratic and respects this concept as it objectively exists, the political analyst stated, adding that this is because they’re not trying to impose anything on anyone through any means, unlike the Golden Billion.
Leading BRICS and SCO countries’ multipolar media outlets should therefore do their utmost to make the global masses, especially in the Golden Billion, aware of this.
Korybko further elaborated that the US, EU, and their Egyptian ally decided to punish Ethiopia for not surrendering its sovereignty to them, which they also intend to set an example for deterring other African states that aspire to balance between the Golden Billion and Global South.
This has seen them employ proxy warfare against their target through the TPLF, economic warfare via sanctions, and information warfare to divide society.
The analyst believes that the Government of Ethiopia needs to continue practicing a policy that can be described as “Democratic Security”, which refers to the range of counter-Hybrid Warfare tactics and strategies for defending its national model of democracy.
“This includes through military-intelligence means against proxy terrorist groups, economic ones in responding to sanctions, and informational means for counteracting propaganda.”
