10 things you may NOT know about the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF)

  1. 1. TPLF never fought a major battle in its history.
  2. The Ethiopian parliament unanimously approved to designate TPLF as a terrorist organization.
  3. TPLF is the first terrorist group to be supported by the UN and Human Rights groups.
  4. The Dedebits (TPLF) became the first army to break the military science code 101. They launched a full-scale siege on the Ethiopian military that was supposed to protect them from enemy forces.
  5. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed may face copyright infringement from former U.S. President Donald Trump for calling TPLF a ‘cancer’.
  6. The Marxist TPLF (pictured) was initially formed in the 1970s to push for Tigrayan self-determination, a goal it later moved away from. It eventually found itself at the center of national politics and led Ethiopia for nearly three decades in a remarkable twist.
  7. The late TPLF leader Meles Zenawi once said, “spending one hour with Eritrean president Isaias is far more worthwhile, rewarding and enlightening than reading ten books.”
  8. Eritreans always regret giving the Addis Ababa 4 kilo palace’s keys to TPLF in 1991.
  9. During Ethiopia’s law enforcement operation in Tigray, TPLF’s motto was “Eritrean Troops Must Withdraw from Tigray!!” The ‘UKUSA’ in London and Washington echoed it.
  10. After fighting commenced in November 2020, the Ethiopian National Defense Forces quickly captured Tigray’s main cities, including the regional capital, Mekele, in 17 days. But the TPLF officials insist it was 11 days.
